Washington June 15 Secretary of the Treasury William G McAdoo tells Delegate Charles A Sulzer that producing gold at maximum now is a top war essential. He notes rising costs and fixed output values but urges no relaxation in gold production and links gold to international credits and national patriotism.
London reports indicate 18 tons of bombs dropped by the British on Zeebrugge docks and German submarine bases at Ostend on the Flemish coast. One enemy machine destroyed, one British aircraft missing, and several anti submarine flights conducted in home waters.
Gen. von Risberg told the Reichstag that soldiers returning from Russia now spread Bolshevik ideas and circulate revolutionary pamphlets. He warned that such influence requires strict discipline to curb unrest.
The Ravalli a steamship owned by Pacific Steamship Company caught fire at Lowe Inlet British Columbia yesterday and was a total loss. Forty nine passengers and 40 crew escaped with baggage partly saved. No lives were lost and the vessel was beached. The cause of the fire is unknown.
The steamer Ravalli, with cannery cargo and 25 Seattle YMCA boys aboard, was lost after a blaze. Venture crew stated the vessel was a total loss as it burned on the Lowe Inlet beach. Captain Nystrom and the first mate narrowly escaped, and wireless calls were inaudible due to mountains.
The notice states that registration for German alien enemy women begins in the United States next Monday, but there is no word yet on when it will begin in Alaska.
Paris report states Sergeant David Putman of Brookline Mass has downed his fifth German on June 10. An official notice notes three victories are official while two are under investigation. If sanctioned, his total would reach 13, making him the top American ace on the fighting front ahead of Lieut. Frank Bailes of New Bedford Mass.
With the Americans on June 15 Gen Pershing reports air forces conducted a second bombing raid behind German lines and all aircraft returned safely despite anti aircraft fire after repulsing two German planes.
In Paris President Wilson former Italian Premier Salandra and Cardinal Mercier were unanimously chosen as members of the French Academy of Moral and Political Science. In the American front, batteries fired about a thousand gas shells into German lines near the Marne and Chateau Thierry as retaliation for German gas. In Washington Dr Francis S Nash Navy Medical Director was fined 1000 dollars after pleading nolo contendere to unlawfully hoarding foods. his wife’s similar charge was dismissed.
London reports Vice Admiral Sir Rosslyn Wemyss, First Sea Lord, says German submarine activity off the American coast is not serious. He believes only one submarine crossed the Atlantic to frighten the United States and doubts a blockade of American ports will occur.
Secretary Daniels informed House Naval Committee chair Padgett that enlistments must reach 131,485 to man ships in service and under construction. Current permanent and enlisted strength stands at 87,000 men.
Admiral Palmer stated the United States will deploy 144 submarine chasers in European waters within two months. A division of new super-dreadnoughts will be added within a year. Captain George Aiden of the British steamship Author reports an all day engagement with a German submarine off the Virginia coast. The raider broke off the chase about 70 miles from the Cape Henry area, apparently avoiding the coastline.
Atlantic Port June 15. The British steamship Keemum, torpedoed by a submarine off the Virginia Capes, arrived in port yesterday afternoon and appears not to have sustained damage.
The German drive toward Paris by the Crown Prince seems checked with heavy losses and few gains. Allies halted the advance south of the Aisne. Noyon salient erased, scarce positions captured southwest of Soissons. Observers speculate next push may target Paris or Channel ports with Haig's forces possibly facing Arras again. German reserves strong from Russia. guns back in high activity.
