Washington reports the aircraft carrier Lexington sank after battle of Coral Sea. About 92 percent of her crew were rescued. The campaign cost Japan over 15 ships sunk or damaged. American losses included Lexington, tanker Neosho, and destroyer Sims.
American Flying Tigers have entered the battle of China proper. They shot down half of 18 Japanese planes over Kweilin in Kwangsi. Chinese report loss of Chuchsien rail town and air station, but say they exacted a tremendous toll on Japan. Another point behind lines in Cheklang province has been recaptured.

President Roosevelt announced an intensive scrap rubber collection campaign from June 15 through June 30. Four hundred thousand filling stations will serve as depots and pay one cent per pound. Citizens are urged to search basements attics and backyards for discarded rubber and reduce auto usage to meet a critical shortage.
German radio said British pilots air mechanics and engineers have arrived in Ankara but London officials refused to comment. The report notes the possible deployment to Turkey and cites no official confirmation.
