Washington June 8 The Andrews flat enlargement plan to add five Justices to the Supreme Court gains attention as Senators and administration leaders seek a compromise for the Roosevelt judiciary bill. White House comments are not available.
Lansing, Michigan, June 8. A general strike paralyzed business in protest of eight arrests. No casualties or further arrests. Gov. Murphy urged calm and civil rights. A mob demonstrated at the State Capitol. An auto workers detachment attempted to extend the holiday to Michigan State College at East Lansing, where they were hazed and rivered by students.
Jean Harlow, platinum blonde film star, died yesterday forenoon in Los Angeles. Her body lay in a white-clad casket as friends recalled her fear of a long trip and a final message to Violet Brennen about never returning. The film colony mourns openly amid expressions of deep sadness.
New York reports pilot Ernest Marquis warned of propeller trouble before takeoff from Jamaica Airport. After lifting off he observed the propeller detach, forcing a controlled descent and a landing beside an undertaker’s shop.
Seattle mayor Jon F. Dare denounces balancing the budget as foolish while proposing a 5 day work week a 150 dollar minimum for municipal workers and an 8 hour day three platoon firemen system New council members were sworn in as he warned against penny wise and pound foolish budgeting saying the city spends too little not too much.
In Portland on June 8 the John L. Lewis CIO drove a wedge into AFL strongholds on the Pacific Coast. It captured the Inland postmen's organization and opened arms to 120,000 woodworkers and maritime workers. CIO supporters led by Harry Bridges claim victory while AFL officials say most members will stay, with some individuals likely to switch. Both AFL and CIO are holding conventions in the city.
Census Bureau data show the 1936 U S death rate at 11.5 per thousand, up from 10.9 in 1935. Total deaths reached 1,474,177, an increase of 81,425 from the previous year. Heat wave last July likely boosted respiratory deaths, contributing to the rise.
SAN FRANCISCO June 8 The drunken pedestrian is becoming as great a problem as the drunken driver says the safety department of the California State Automobile Association. Officials note that since 1929 drivers who had been drinking prior to accidents increased fourfold while injured pedestrians rose fivefold.
Four Soviet explorer scientists from a wintering camp plumbed the North Polar seas by radio from ice floes and reported varied depths. The greatest depth reached was 140,375 feet while water depth ranged from 659 to about 1,900 feet with pressure crushing the thermometer at the sea bottom.
Twelve year old Andrew J Blakeley Jr of Los Angeles is resting comfortably after a successful operation to remove a metal pencil cap swallowed last Thursday from one lung. The attending physician said no complications are expected.
Dublin June 8 The news reel of the Duke of Windsor’s wedding will be exhibited in every Dublin movie theatre the Irish Free State and will not be shown in England. The coronation reels of King George the Sixth are virtually banned in the Free State.

Anchorage June 3 Robert Fechner head of the Civilian Conservation Corps said the CCC may launch a broad Alaska fire prevention program to train fire crews at strategic centers and fly them to fire points. He proposed building emergency landing fields and noted last year’s fires ravaged about 3 000 square miles. He also spoke on protecting migratory fowl nests and timber as part of CCC work. Fechner planned to map a program to Alaska. He left Anchorage to visit Palmer. Carbon bisulphide and calcium cyanide found effective eradicating red harvester ants.
A two hour onslaught of wind dust and rain near Yakima caused heavy damage across Central Washington. Three people were injured including Mrs Edward Hales and her son Alfred who were hospitalized after a collision triggered by the storm. Mrs Guy Story of Kennewick was hurt when a berry shed collapsed.
In a Lake Washington area tavern near Juanita deputy coroner reports a woman and the proprietor Ce cil Thacker died from gunfire after a reported life story and a threat of discovery. A rifle and revolver lay near the bed and neighbors recall hearing shots around six this morning.
Salt Lake City Utah June 8 search for seven crash victims intensifies after a leg bone tied with shoe laces is found among wreckage. The small fragment marks the first human trace amid hundreds of pounds of debris on a cliff ledge 25 miles southeast, as thirty men work in ice and debris for bodies.
Ottawa on June 8 Judge FP Smiley sentenced twenty year old Arthur Matthews a store clerk to three years in prison for demanding money by threats. The judge said Canada is no place for emulation of the Mattson kidnap murder type of crime.

Four youths aged 10 to 14 were bound over to the grand jury on malicious destruction of property charges related to vandalism at the Oscar Nielson home. They also faced charges of shooting bullets through the tail of W. E. Dunile’s airplane while grounded, damage that requires rebuilding the tail fin.
Intercoastal Airways piloted by Ray Renshaw landed a red Stinson Reliant seaplane at 4:30 PM yesterday in Juneau from Ketchikan with E. H. J. Logan of American Can Co as the sole passenger. Renshaw then flew a charter to Haines and back, arriving Juneau about 5 PM with Logan again onboard before continuing to Ketchikan. Logan remains in Juneau at the Gastineau Hotel.
Seattle Chamber of Commerce Good Will Tour members and wives arrived in Juneau aboard the Aleutian for a 12 hour stay as part of their biennial Alaska visit. Gov. John W. Troy and local leaders welcomed them with talks on radio facilities and trade ties. a luncheon with Juneau and Alaska officials followed, with remarks about Alaska’s trading industry and future cooperation.
