Allied planes guarding supply routes to Australia report sinking two more Japanese submarines and likely a third off Australia's east coast. In five days the tally reaches six or possibly seven subs destroyed in the Australian theater, following four sunk during a raid on Sydney Harbor.
Allied bombers targeted the Koepang airfield and docks at Rabaul in New Britain. The June 5 communique reports direct hits, fires started and antiaircraft installations destroyed.

Pacific Coast broadcasting stations were shut down last night by orders from the Western Defense Command and Fourth Army. On Wednesday night all radio stations ceased transmission for about an hour and a half as a precaution against potential enemy use of radio waves to locate targets.

Washington June 5 The Foreign Policy Association urges popular election of governors in Alaska Hawaii and Puerto Rico as a step toward local self government and eventual statehood. The recommendation, announced by Charles F Reid of the private research group, calls for legislation to consider statehood for these territories.
Berlin acknowledges 8,000 killed since the start of air attacks in a Swiss telegraph dispatch. The figure likely covers British raids on Cologne and Essen. New York sources estimate Cologne raid fatalities at about 20,600.
Mr and Mrs R L Jernberg departed late yesterday for Ketchikan aboard an Ellis Air Transport plane piloted by Bud Bodding. They arrived from Sitka where Mr Jernberg had practiced law for nearly two years, and will base in Ketchikan where he is appointed Assistant United States Attorney. Locals hosted them during their Juneau stay and their many friends were entertained.
Lieutenant Robert C. Taylor of New Britain Connecticut and Yale graduate receives official notice of promotion to Captain. He has served on active duty since January 1941 and previously worked for Russell and Erwin Manufacturing Company hardware makers.
