Kansas Prison Convict Captured After Kidnapping Spree

Frank Sawyer a 33 year old bank robber and killer escaped from the Kansas Penitentiary with ten others on Memorial Day. He abducted motorists including County Clerk Bob Goodfellow and his sister Lois driving toward Oklahoma City. Lois crashed the car. a gun battle ensued and Sawyer was captured by Sheriff Horace Crisp and deputies after Goodfellow was used as a shield and wounded.

Gold payment of contracts declared off

Senate approves resolution to pay all contracts in legal tender money. The measure, 48 to 20, eliminates gold as requirement for public and private obligations, including war debts and bonds. It has passed the House and awaits presidential signature. Two attempts to strip retroactive effects were rejected.

Marie Lavergne, 24, jumped from Tacoma's Eleventh Street Bridge into Puget Sound, was rescued by ship seamen after being dared by boys and a girl friend. She later said the leap helped her get sober though she was booked for intoxication.
