Washington July 1 The United States Government ended the 1929 fiscal year with a surplus of 185 million dollars and debt reduced to 16.931 billion, the lowest since World War I. Receipts reached 4.083 billion while expenditures totaled 9.843 billion, and income tax receipts rose due to general prosperity.
L. W. Brewer became Alaska's second Commissioner of Education, taking the oath from Judge Frank A. Boyle. He succeeds L. D. Henderson, serving since 1917, and vows no radical policy changes while studying the system this year. Mrs. Brewer plans to join him from Bellingham to begin visits to Southeast schools this fall.
A small blaze in a Main Street garage was discovered near the rear roof corner. Smoke issued from the roof as firefighters found a smoldering rafter beneath a corrugated iron roof where electric wires resting on the roof had shorted. Damage was nominal.
Sarah Shields Pitt of Ketchikan and Mm Matheson were arrested there by Deputy Marshals on separate Sundays. Pitt faced a 30 day sentence in the Ketchikan Federal jail for violating the Alaska Bone Dry Law. Matheson was described as violently insane and guarded by a special matron to prevent self harm.
Kansas City July 1 Senator William E Borah of Idaho will speak at the International Christian Endeavor gathering July 3 8 to address youth problems. Other speakers include Rev Daniel A Poling James Kelly W A MacTaggart Mrs Mabel Walker Willebrandt and Fred Ramsey among noted church and youth leaders.
Joseph Stewart longtime executive secretary to the Postmaster General and special assistant to the Attorney General died at home in Washington at age 70. He directed statistical work and legal affairs for 47 years and helped shape the parcel post and railway mail systems.

Bobby Jones won his third U S Open title with Al Espionosa as his opponent. Jones dominated the 36 hole playoff, finishing 23 strokes ahead.
John T Spickett pioneer and well known Juneau entertainment man and former Palace Theatre owner returned on the Princess Alice Saturday from the South where he had been for several months He recently underwent a serious operation in Los Angeles and came back by steamer looking fine and glad to be back in Juneau Mrs Spickett accompanied him south a month ago
Ars J Adler of San Francisco a cousin of Mrs Charles Goldstein and Mrs J Danzinger of San Francisco arrive as house guests for about a week aboard the Princess Alice. Charles F Solomon visiting with his aunt Mrs Adler is staying at the Gastineau hotel during the Alaska trip.
The Fourth of July Committee announced that all girls in the egg and spoon contest must bring their own eggs and spoons for the race.
Charles Richards a renowned Montana cafe man and Mrs Richard plan to run the Gastineau Cafe in Juneau with JH Cann stating the Yukon steamer will transfer management. They aim to open July 4 offering local-sourced ingredients and solid service with a cook and staff joining from Montana.
Capt. C. Eb. Ahues of Libby McNeill Libby reports Taku cannery workers plan to visit the city for Independence Day. About 2,000 tanks are in pack ahead of last season with nearly all traps set. In Treku Inlet a humpback salmon run of 1,000 fish per boat was noted, first such humpies reported here. Pink and humpback runs shown modest gains and expected to rise after July 10 tides.
Col Charles A. Lindbergh soars in a glider at a St. Louis field. More than 10 000 spectators watch his first glider flight during a Sunday visit to his legal home since marriage. He plans to leave for Wichita with Mrs Lindbergh.
A July report from Nashville shows the first month under the malt extract tax law. About 2,000,000 bottles of home brew were produced and malt extract sales reached 300,000 pounds in June. The tax amounts to a fraction of a cent per pound.
Twenty two guests at the wedding of Louise Assaro and Edith Comrata in Chicago last Saturday fell ill from suspected food poisoning. The wedding cake is blamed as the cause. Six doctors treated the victims, and Joe Sando, the baker, surrendered to police, unable to explain the cake’s condition. Doctors considered icing preparation may have contained lead traces.
Tanana Alaska July 1 All house occupied by Martin Noble burned to the ground. Mrs Noble and four children escaped unhurt but Noble cut his foot on broken glass. They lost all belongings.
Two Alaska Railroad survey workers from Anchorage, O A Robertson and George Waller, were killed when a passenger train struck them near Julius Sto on. The men were reportedly thrown from a speeder onto the tracks as the train rounded a curve.
Engineer in charge A J Ela reports the transmission line survey from Point Greeley on Taku Inlet to the upper end of Snattisham Inlet near the projected plant site is nearly complete with only a few odds and ends left. His son Byron and J A Cameron accompany him. Weather has aided timely completion and most remaining work should finish this week.
San Francisco negotiators report talks between Dollar Steamship Co and Goodyear Zeppelin Co on a possible btrans Pacific dirigible service. Stanley Dollar cites meetings with Goodyear officials as ongoing. first route likely San Francisco to Hawaii with future expansion for passengers mail and freight. Goodyear builds two large airships, one for trans Atlantic and one for trans Pacific use.
June was slightly cooler and wetter than average with a mean temperature of 54.2 degrees. The total precipitation reached 4.15 inches, 0.61 inch above normal, and measurable rain fell on 18 days. The driest June on record was 1913 and the wettest was 1904, while sunshine totaled 195.3 hours.
The Princess Alice under Capt T Cliffe docked in Juneau Saturday evening at six en route to Skagway at eleven. Ten passengers were carried to Juneau and 112 tourists bound for Skagway will start the Yukon River trip. freight totaled 140 tons to discharge at Skagway for the Interior. Names of Juneau arrivants include J H Cann John T Spickett Steve Johnson and several accompanying ladies.
Mrs H L Faulkner Mrs A J McIntyre and Mrs McIntyre of Hoquiam Washington sail on the Princess Alice to visit their niece Mrs H J Faulkner. They plan to return south on the Alice tomorrow as the steamer continues to Skagway.
In Los Angeles on July 1 Leo Nomis and Maurice Morrison took off at 7 30 am to attempt a refuel endurance record in a St Ann’s Hospice related flight. Mrs Arnold Curris underwent a minor operation yesterday. The two pilots aimed to tie a common single plane duration record.

Steamer Yukon sailed for Alaska ports Sunday at 8 oclock with 209 first class passengers and 85 steerage. Bound for Juneau are M. L. Merritt Lily Kronquist Mrs E M Polley F Ross Harold Gallwas K H Waite W S Barber R A Reische Charles Richards and wife and D P McLaughien.
Steve Guanzon was charged with contempt of court and brought from Wrangell this morning by Deputy Marshal C J Sullivan. His hearing is not yet set. He was subpoenaed by Judge Frank A Boyle as a witness in a United States Commissioner’s Court case and failed to appear, triggering the contempt warrant. Deputy Sullivan, working at Ketchikan, left for Hood Bay to conduct a property sale under an execution this afternoon.
Miss Neil Wold and Fred Ordway were quietly married Saturday evening at 10 o'clock at the residence of Dr and Mrs H DeVighne with Rev Harry R Allen officiating. The couple planned a brief wedding trip and are well known in Juneau with Mrs Ordway employed at Alaska Electric Light and Power and Mr Ordway proprietor of the Alaska Scenic Views stop.
King George arrives at Buckingham Palace after a jubilant demonstration in London. The crowd roars as the national anthem plays and the king appears visibly happy and healthy, riding through cheering streets with Queen Mary and Mrs. Majesty greeting the celebration.
Under Justice Department orders, the United States Marshal's office will close 40 minutes earlier daily. Closing shifts from 5 pm to 4 30 pm and will not occur during the noon lunch hour. The changes take effect today as announced by Marshal Albert White.

Four people died in weekend aviation accidents on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Pablo Robey of Columbus, Ohio, was killed when his plane hit a radio mast. Tra Wilkinson, Capital Airways official, and his stepson Charles Wilson died in Sacramento. Ira Martin survived, while Nicholas Englmann of Philadelphia perished when a plane crashed and burned.
