In Versailles on January 17 the Chamber of Deputies elected DesChanel Socialist as President after rejecting Clemenceau’s nomination. DesChanel, previously President of the Chamber, won 734 votes from 916 cast, as political moves unfold following the caucus.
Paris January 17 Premier Clemenceau, who had consented to run, failed to win the nomination for president at a long caucus of Deputies and Senators. Paul Painlevé led with 480 votes to 389 for Clemenceau, while President Poincaré declined to stand again and General Foch received a single vote. Several senators circulated a petition to confer with Clemenceau calling him “The savior of our country.”
Spokane reports Inland Empire Railroad will operate the Inland division interurban lines to Moscow Idaho and Colfax Washington. The other company property including street car system and interurban line was purchased by bondholders at a receivership sale.
