Group Captain P. A. Gilchrist of the RCAF was named overall Air Commander for the Canadian American winter maneuvers. The exercise, called Sweetbriar, will test air and ground units across Yukon and Alaska with about 5,000 personnel, including airborne infantry from both nations. Canadian troops have begun winter training at Wainwright Camp, Alberta, before advancing north.

Raymond Savalo, 18, charged with kidnapping a 14 year old after assaulting her mother, was captured near Buckeye by a highway patrolman. The girl Teresa Vasquez was with him and appears unharmed. Savals was questioned by detectives. he speaks only Spanish.
Joy Fem Chase, 13, told juvenile officers a half hour of horror as a boy about 15 stabbed and carved figure eights on her chest with a knife after forcing her behind a signboard. She was treated for deep cuts after returning from Westchester Junior High School.
Oklahoma City University will discontinue football after a trustees vote. President Dr Q G Smith announced the move following a meeting with coaches and players. Coach Orville Tuttle and assistants Ralph Schilling and Bob Fenimore will be paid through the year. scholarships will be honored.
The Harbor Committee of the United Trollers of Alaska in Juneau endorses a small boat harbor at Douglas. They urge the U S Corps of Engineers to proceed to relieve congestion in Juneau and accommodate future growth of the fishing fleet.

Flood perils rose in Indiana and Illinois as a severe ice storm struck Memphis causing widespread damage. Hundreds homeless. at least three drowned as swollen rivers flooded areas. Freezing rain and sleet hindered travel from Ohio to Pennsylvania. Memphis utilities and schools disrupted with thousands without electricity or heat. Citrus and tomato crops face damage in California and Imperial Valley.
In Phoenix on January 6, three nights of freezing in the Salt River valley caused an estimated five million dollars in citrus crop damage. Grapefruit Administrative Committee manager Byron J. Showers said salvageable fruit may total about 700,000 boxes of grapefruit and 400,000 boxes of oranges amid temperatures as low as 13 degrees.

Spencer Moosa reports in Taipei that President Truman’s hands off Formosa statement unsettled Nationalist leaders and prompted Republican warnings in Washington. Officials fear U.S. noninvolvement could leave Chiang Kai-shek’s government more isolated as internal and external pressures mount. The Senate debate over aid to Formosa stretched hours as partisans pressed for action while urging care not to undercut Chiang.
London reports Britain recognizes the Peiping government in a move seen as protecting Hong Kong and safeguarding British investments in China. The step places Britain with the Soviet Union against Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist regime and prompts swift reactions from the U S, France, and other Western powers.
President Truman outlines 12 fiscal and policy proposals including tax revisions to reduce inequality and boost revenue, a private housing investment program for middle income families, longer RF C loan maturities, farm income protection with production payments, creation of a Columbia Valley Administration and Seaway project, expanded education funding, broadened Social Security, extended rent control, continued foreign recovery programs, charter for the International Trade Organization, technical aid and guarantees for underdeveloped countries, foreign investment tax adjustments, expanded Federal Reserve banking authority, consumer credit regulation, and commodity exchange speculation oversight.
Ambassador at large Philip Jessup reaffirmed that the United States has not abandoned China and will not abandon it despite President Truman’s Formosa decision. Spokesman Jessup said there is no reason to change yesterday’s stance, stressing continued friendship and support for the Chinese people even with Communist gains.
President Truman nominated Everett W. Hepp of Alaska to be U.S. Attorney for the District of Alaska, with confirmation to follow. Hepp would succeed Harry O. Arend as the Alaska U.S. attorney, as a Seattle division move and ship movements are noted in the press brief.
