In Arctic fighting, Finnish forces press retreating Russians beyond their borders with heavy casualties reported. Prisoners are described as surrendering and weak from hunger. Southern air raids target the front while Finnish aircraft repel Russian advances. eastern front artillery activity noted.

Captain Arthur G. Trudeau Civil Engineer for the War Department North Pacific Division will visit Juneau this month to inspect progress on the small boat harbor. City Council discussed harbor floats and transferred 5000 dollars in PWA funds to a construction account for the boat harbor sewer project. Bids will be sought to replace nine fender pilings near the Warner Machine Shop. Mayor Lucas proposed a pasteurization ordinance but the city attorney said it requires Territorial action and raw milk risk remains with drinkers.
Oliver T. Edwards, a Forest Service biologist, returned on the Taku today after a holiday vacation in the United States. He paused briefly in Ketchikan during the trip.
The steamer Mount McKinley scheduled to sail Sunday at 9 00 am for Alaska has been cancelled over a deck crew quarrel over berthing. One hundred fifty passengers were booked. Earlier a radiogram said PAA transfers to planes from Juneau would not sail before the 13th. The Alaska is slated to sail on the 13th.

Seattle January 6 The coordinating committee of the Washington District Council of the Maritime Federation of the Pacific drafts a ten point program for the January 9 conference in Juneau Alaska The plan covers opposing Alaska for Alaskans arguing it harms labor The agenda includes Alaska Navy base projects Bureau of Fisheries reorganization freight and passenger rates Alaska air mail service labor hospitalization for fishermen and allied workers and federation views on radio broadcasts Delegates will travel from Seattle aboard the Mt McKinley to Juneau on Sunday.
In St Louis on January 6, strong subzero weather froze Mrs. William J. Tate outside her home as a blaze swept through the residence killing three small children. The mother watched helplessly as flames consumed the house.
London reports confirmed British arms and ammunition are being sent to Sweden for its neutrality in the Russo Finnish war, with Finland receiving additional equipment. Britain acknowledges aiding the Finns and says some gear once meant for its army is now on the Finnish front. Sweden asks Russia to probe the Fenris incident, alleging shelling and fire by a Russian submarine with crew rescued.
A voluntary train carrying more than 500 people departed from Stockholm for Finland to aid in the conflict. The exact number of Danish volunteers aboard the train is not specified.
Washington January 6 The Democratic National Committee chaired by James A Farley will meet February 5 to decide when the party should hold its nominating convention. discussion includes shifting from June to late August for a fast campaign while Republicans debate later dates.
Preston Grover Washington reports that Britain and France favor a U S pledge to keep German raiders out of the western Atlantic. The authority says without such guarantee Britain would reserve the right to act, as in past wars, in German acts at sea.
The text argues for expanding what counts as war like acts to shield British ships within the neutrality zone. It suggests banning German raiders and forbidding resupply of German ships there, allowing Britain to patrol more of the Atlantic and North Sea. It notes Jamaica and other areas sheltering and refueling British vessels.
The piece notes Germany could gain less than Britain and France from the conflict. Over 50 German freighters are stuck in American ports. They risk patrolling British cruisers if they leave the three mile limit. A 300 mile safe zone could let them start their dash home on their own schedule. Continued on Page Four.

Mrs. Dick Law wife of a CIO union official was found slain in Aberdeen Washington as police sought the axe slayer. Neighbors and relatives reported the home had been ransacked after a riot earlier at a Finnish workers event. Law had demanded police protection for his family but none was granted. The coroner's inquest could not fix a time of death. Law condemned Finnish rioters and joined a claim for damages to the hall from the riot.
Pete Miscovich, prominent interior miner, flew in from Fairbanks today aboard PAA and stayed at the Gastineau Hotel. He plans to sail south on the next boat.

Robert Schoettler was appointed local chairman to arrange a President's Birthday Ball in Juneau on January 27 to raise funds against infantile paralysis. The Baranof Hotel will host the dance with Juneau Ellis and others keeping the date open and avoiding competing events. President Roosevelt's birthday is January 30 and the dance was moved to Saturday evening the 27th due to the weekday date.
