Alaska mineral production in 1939 totaled 24.9 million dollars, down 2.7 million from 1938 but still the second highest gold value in history. The Geological Survey notes the year was fourth in overall mineral output since 1880, with gold mainly from placer and lode sources and a long-term outlook for continued high output.
The British steamer Boxhill, 5600 tons, sank in the North Sea after an explosion. Twenty crew members are believed lost. Twelve survivors out of 32 landed at a British port. Survivors said the ship sank quickly with little time to launch lifeboats.
Fire at the White Spot Liquor Store on Second Street confined to the store with minor blaze spread risk to nearby buildings. Owner Ed Sweum cites a total loss valued at 3500 dollars, with insurance down from 8500 to 2700. Firemen contained the blaze and residents evacuated as police guarded the scene.
The German freighter Tacoma, 4800 tons, has been interned in Montevideo, Uruguay, for the duration of the war after the government ordered ships to leave port or be interned. The Tacoma, which supplied the Graf Spee, remains in port despite reports of preparations to depart.
