The Senate approved House bills authorizing Juneau to issue 200000 in bonds for permanent street and sewer improvements and Sitka to issue 25000 in bonds for a school building. Rk. RE. Robertson had sought authorization last year. the issue goes to a local election for decision.
The Supreme Court ruled that the First National Bank of Mobile Alabama may have its records inspected by the government for income tax assessment. It also upheld a New Jersey state license requirement to sell intoxicating liquor as valid despite the Eighteenth Amendment.
Washington February 2 The House adopted an amendment to the independent offices appropriation bill proposing abolition of the Tariff Commission on July 1.
Mrs. Peter Floria of Detroit exposed a $2 traffic fine paid by her husband for driving the wrong way on a one way street. She sent $200 to cover it and, with travel costs and other expenses, believes the incident has cost her about $300. The husband was fined $2 and paid it. she sought a receipt to reveal the supposed affair.
In Seattle on a February night Mrs. Helen Morley wife of Guy Morley of Victoria B C was killed when a taxi ride ended in a gun attack. A man identified as E Manheart once of Los Angeles is sought after the shooting as the vehicle fled toward Capitol Hill and the assailant vanished.
In Tacoma on February 7, three men Joseph Ward 27 George Myers 93 and W J Murray 28 were arrested after a stolen car led police to the Bothell State Bank robbery. The owner alerted police during a theft report and Murray admitted the vehicle was stolen. Ward and Myers were identified as the robbers who held up Bothell State Bank, escaping with 2000 dollars.
New York listeners heard a sudden halt in a Federation Quartet performance on WEAF as a caller requested the old hymn In the Homeland to comfort his dying mother. The quartet delivered the song with feeling after an abrupt interruption, and the announcer explained the plea. The caller said the hymn had been running through his mother’s head all day.
SEATTLE Feb 2 E G McMicken Passenger Traffic Manager of the Pacific Steamship Co the Admiral Line declared today bookings for Alaska tours during the coming season promise to eclipse all previous years.
John A Peterson a Seattle insurance man and former Nome stampeder known as Ramps Peterson died when a car plunged from Railroad Avenue trestle into Elliott Bay. His wife and sister in law Mrs Sarah Fitch of Toledo Ohio also drowned. Peterson rose to prominence in Nome club life and Alaska strikes before moving to Seattle.
Indignation rose in Greece as Turkey again moves against the Most Reverend Constantinos Patriarch of the Greek Catholic Church. The 1923 class order remains under color, prompting outcry over Turkish actions and church leadership.
Minneapolis Feb 2 Magnus Johnson begins contesting the election of Thomas D Schall Republican and his Senate successor alleging violation of the corrupt practices act in the challenge filed with state authorities.
Seward February 2 The Alaska Steamship Company steamer Yukon returned to Seward with tank leaks after a heavy snow squall near Cape Resurrection on the way to Seattle. Repairs found pumps could handle the leaks and the ship resumed its southbound voyage at ten on Sunday morning.

Indianapolis mayor Lewis Shank argues crime rises with population, suggests commission government to curb political influence, and notes ties between candidates and lawless elements. He cites a gambler helped elect a Chicago official.
Joe Ferrera and his 14 year old son Frank perished in a January 16 blizzard while tending a fox trap line near Cape Thompson north of Kotzebue Sound. Ferrera, a pioneer and native of Portugal, had been active in the area as fox populations were reported abundant.
Interior Department plans three Dawson Yukon river belt line tours for next summer. Two routes run Seattle via Skagway Dawson Fort Yukon Tanana Nenana Anchorage Seward, the other from Seattle to Seward and back.
Washington february 2 the agriculture department released its annual outlook report noting the general outlook for American agriculture is fairly encouraging compared with recent years the report cautions there may be slackening in domestic demand for farm products next winter.
Homer Collins in Louisville offers $500 to any surgeon willing to crawl into a sand cave and chloroform his brother Floyd to amputate a leg. Collins became trapped while trying to reach the entrance and nearly blocks the passage as water rises. Rescue attempts are underway with a drill en route from Louisville. The cave lies near Cave City and Collins was trapped last Friday afternoon.
Seattle Feb 2 Chinese merchant Jack Raymond Lew Dow s brother in law Mrs Harry Lew and Fred Woo were wounded as they left a home. The shooting is linked to tongs and police say it is the first case of whites used by Chinese in an attack.
In Herrin on February 2 a pistol fight at the Lyman Hotel left a man claiming to be an officer dead after firing on and wounding Police Chief Sim Stephens and frightening hotel staff. Policeman Rufus Whitson shot the attacker as Sheriff Galligan sought martial law, ending the disturbance.
Mai Th, Feb 2. Cecilia Punohu, 16, grieved by a scolding, soaked her clothes with kerosene and ignited them, burning to death. The tragedy occurred on Mailuki Island as reported in local dispatches.
Storms cripple Nome to 10 below zero, delaying dog team delivery of diphtheria antitoxin. Gunnar Kasson arrives with the vaccine at 5:30 AM but the containers are frozen. Reports speak of a new diphtheria case, uncertain arrival times, and 27 to 28 suspected cases with no deaths yet. Ed Rohn’s team races toward Nome for last dash to safety.

William Green president of the American Federation of Labor urged modifying the Volstead act to permit sale of light wines and beer at a Samuel Gompers commemoration in Boston. He said organized labor will not steer politics and noted he has never drunk alcohol, yet supports his union’s stance.
