Soviet armies press four fronts against Germany as winter campaign gains inches south of Stalingrad. Red forces capture dozen districts and key stations, with Rostov offensive advancing amid German counter-attacks as Kotelnikovski remains under attack and the factory area at Stalingrad sees heavy fighting.
Allied columns push toward Tunisian coast in central Tunisia while Rommel’s units engage American and French forces there. Tunis airfield and Lagoulette harbor in Morocco rendered useless by Allied bombings. An Axis merchant ship sunk off Pantellaria. In Europe, RAF and US air forces claim heavy German losses at Lorient and Stalingrad fronts. American bombers hit Rangoon and Guadalcanal mop continues with 150 Japanese killed. In Burma RAF strikes Monywa. Moscow reports advances south of Stalingrad with recaptured cities along the Volga. MacArthur reports Buna area breach and attacks on three Japanese ships at Rabaul. Don River front sees 28 German planes shot down and many block houses recaptured.

Berlin reports a surprise evening strike by Nazi long range bombers on Casablanca Morocco an Allied port. Berlin also claims Axis forces sank three Allied transports from a convoy off Bengasi.
In the wake of the sinking of the Army transport President Coolidge, discussed is whether the Army or Navy should operate transports. Army officers question Navy navigational skill while the Navy cites failures of Navy transports off North Africa and a damaged battleship. The Coolidge was Army operated under the War Shipping Administration.

Gen. Henri Douore Giraud announced the arrest of 12 men in Algiers to forestall further assassinations after Admiral Jean Francois Darian was killed six days earlier. Four arrestees were police officers, with Giraud insisting the aim is order and unity among French forces including De Gaulle aides.
Canberra reports Prime Minister John Curtin stating that United Nations in the Pacific face aid denial for total war while Japan builds strength. He calls for more Pacific support and criticizes an overdone Hitler first policy, urging increased land, sea, and air力量. Mrs Malvinill Mulvihill set to return to Juneau after weeks south.

Washington announces a five percent Victory tax on wages above set thresholds, expected to raise about two billion dollars next year. Employers must withhold the tax from paychecks and report quarterly using Form V-1, with specific per-period deduction levels based on annual $624. They also strafed and bombed three Japanese planes at Rekata Bay on Santa Isabel Island about 150 miles northwest of Guadalcanal.
A Soviet communique reported the German Army in Stalingrad completely liquidated with 95,000 Germans killed and 72,000 captured. It said the Fifth, Sixth, Ninth, Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Romanian Infantry divisions were destroyed. The Red Army also captured Oblivakaya railway station.
The Admiralty announced British warships made contact with an enemy force in the northern waters. An enemy cruiser was damaged and an enemy destroyer was severely hit and seen sinking. operations continue.
