Silver rose by one and one sixteenth pence to 22 1/16 pence an ounce, about 48.99 cents in New York. Small offerings were readily absorbed by speculative buyers, mainly from India.
Washington Dec 30 Democratic leaders arrange details for the opening of Congress next Friday. It is not yet decided whether President Roosevelt will deliver his opening message.
Arthur Riendeau Mine Superintendent at the Alaska Juneau mine was struck by a Yellow Taxicab driven by Warren Lyons in front of the A J mine office at 6 45 am Sunday. He sustained a fractured right leg bone a scalp laceration requiring four stitches and multiple bruises. Riendeau was taken to St Anns Hospital after the incident and had been walking from Kirchoffers car when he stepped into the street and was hit. He has worked 35 years underground and 11 years with the A J Mine and many visitors crowd the hospital.
In Chicago on December 30 Mrs Penelope Mikes 31 and her daughter Lulu Voormas 17 were killed by gunfire in a family quarrel inside their apartment. Louis Voormas 15 and Philip Mikes 34 the stepfather and milk wagon driver were wounded. the stepfather faces a disorderly conduct warrant after the incident. A second boy fled to safety.
Dan Sutherland former Alaska delegate will appear before Congress to push abolition of fish traps in Alaska. He represents the Prince William Sound Fishermen and Cannery Workers Association in the coming session convening Friday, per Albert White Territorial Republican Chairman.
George W Kline chairman of the Nebraska Progressive League proposed drafting United States Senator George W Norris to head the independent Roosevelt for President campaign committee in six midwestern states. He believed Roosevelt's reelection could not be left to the regular Democratic organization.
Washington dispatch says the Chamber of Commerce of the United States warned that business leaders will oppose all NRA flavored measures. It also said they would oppose a cash bonus bill and oppose heavy federal expenditures, and warned against any permanent neutrality move that could edge the United States toward war.
Jack Barnes a 70 year old Juneau night watchman is missing since Christmas morning. He was last seen leaving the Almakmtt hovel around 3 30 after visiting the Alaskan hotel bar and a pool hall swing. Authorities and private parties search the waterfront and cabins, with deputies and police involved and a possible foul play theory due to money on his person and lack of relatives in Alaska.
G Stanley Herbert, mining engineer, via dog team, reports rich gold and silver deposits and oil in the Endicott Mountains, 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Field assays show high grade ore over a 24 mile square area with large galena deposits and a 3.5 mile silver vein, with petroleum 40 miles away. Herbert left due to famine conditions. prior prospecting was by Ned Arey, a placer miner who died years ago.
San Francisco obituary notes Gen Hunter Liggett aged 78 died at Letterman Hospital Presidio. Career spanned 1879 start at West Point through Cuban and Philippine service to World War I where he rose to Lieutenant General commanding an army over 250000. He organized First American Army Corps before joining Pershing in France.
Attorney General James Truitt announced he will run again for judge and file his candidacy before February 1. A longtime Anchorage lawyer, Truitt was elected in 1932 amid a Democratic landslide. The Republicans already have Harry G. McCain of Ketchikan as a candidate.
