Washington December 8 Railway Director General McAdoo will issue an order to pool all traffic and common use of terminals and track equipment. The order will require hauling freight by the shortest route regardless of billing or routing while retaining current officers and employees. Civil service examinations may improve merit promotions, though this is speculative.
Chicago reports that many railways have ordered immediate curtailment of luxurious passenger service as the government commandeers roads. The Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul System will remove observation, buffet and smoking cars from all trains to free capacity for freight and fuel for moving necessary supplies.
Washington reports about 250000 miles of American rail systems merged into a single war network with no ceremonies. A Melbourne dispatch reports Australia’s referendum on conscription with 889000 supporting and 1702000 opposing the measure. The tally emphasizes a large anti conscription majority in the nationwide vote.
In France two American privates were killed during a moonlit raid by German aviators near a town while another shell struck a party of American engineers in French trenches. An American corporal and a private died on Christmas Eve. Western front mentions include Americans in Haig's list of those cited for special mention. French forces repelled German attempts northeast of Verdun as heavy artillery continues.

Toronto December 28 approximately twenty five million dollars in extra revenue is expected from a Dominion order that grants a general fifteen percent increase in passenger and freight rates for Canadian railways.
