Italian High Command reportedly throws massive reinforcements into Albania as Greek forces clash in heavy snow near Klisura Pass. Dispatches describe intense fighting across Khuratself and northern fronts as the war escalates.
Defense Commissioner Sidney Hillman clashed with the War Department over Ford engine orders. After a 4000 engine contract was awarded, Hillman pressed for an official meeting when a second order emerged, revealing deep divisions with Knudsen and labor leaders amid a Roosevelt administration dispute.
President Roosevelt, speaking at a news conference, said he has not seen the final defense budget figure. Officials expect about ten billion dollars for next year. Budget Director Harold Smith met the White House shortly after and may have the estimate. The president may deliver the annual state of the nation message in early January, possibly January 3, 4, or 5.
Berlin Dec 27 Germans plan dozens of model farm villages along the Westwall to reinforce the boundary. A dense population is cited as strengthening defense as the plowshare meets the sword in this new colonization effort.
Dispatches describe Dodecanese islanders in Greece organizing an expedition to drive Italy from the Aegean. The 13-island group led by Rhodes, with towns like Patmos and Cos, has a long Greek history through Persian, Roman, and Turkish eras, and locals insist on their Greek identity.
Allied forces bombarded the Libyan port of Bardia where about 20 000 Italian troops are trapped. Cairo military sources say the fall of the port is near and a final assault awaits Gen Archibald Wavell’s order to advance.
The Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Company announced a 12 percent dividend payable February 1 to stockholders of record January 7. For 1940 the quarterly dividend totals 15 cents per share, or 60 cents a year, down from 80 cents in 1939 and $1.20 in 1938, as directors cite higher costs and taxes.
A Dutch naval officer reports unfinished Netherlands warships are being completed in British ports and will soon see action. The Royal Dutch Navy cooperates with Britain and will gain a destroyer from the United States in the base deal. The larger part of the Dutch fleet escaped to England during the invasion, with only three gunboats and two mine layers lost.
The coast is pummeled by the ocean with Redondo Beach hit hard as a house and a liquor store collapse. Damage estimates reach 250000 dollars along the coast. Census notes show population gains in 1940 across several cities.
Budapest reports say all passenger and freight trains between Hungary and Romania will stop from Sunday to January 15. British bombers hit the invasion port of Bordeaux while a lone German raider near London was driven off by anti aircraft fire. The German threat was repelled before reaching London defenses. Seal skins for the American trade are auctioned in St. Louis each September, averaging about $220 per skin.
