Chicago reports a grim Christmas week as traffic crashes, gun violence, suicides, drownings, and other accidents push fatalities past 500. Pennsylvania leads with 41 deaths, followed by Illinois? 38, Ohio 35, and California 30 amid crowded highways and heavy travel.
Obituary notes Newton D. Baker, 66, former Secretary of War under Wilson, died at home in Cleveland. The report covers his career as a lawyer, pacifist advocate, and key figure in wartime mobilization, plus remarks on his stance against Prohibition and his continued influence in Democratic politics.
A thaw caused a boulder to fall on railroad tracks triggering an express wreck near Pittsburgh. Two crew members, Engineer Oscar Kim Strong and Fireman William F. Strong, were killed. The incident coincided with Baker’s Cleveland politics and events in Mexico prompting troop mobilization.

Mayo E. W. Scott of Hollandale Mississippi issued a proclamation urging every able bodied citizen to arm themselves and shoot to kill when a sneak thief is found near a home. Hollandale with a 4200 population faces a rise in robberies.
A gas heater touched off a Christmas tree fire in Los Angeles killing a mother and her three year old son. Mrs. Margaret Gumber, 23, and David, 3, died. Four fathers were seriously burned.
In Bethlehem on Christmas Eve a new wave of terror swept the Holy Land as four thousand soldiers patrolled the hills on Christmas Day and yesterday following a battle between Arabs and British forces. The holiday bells rang amid the tense aftermath of the clash.
In Washougal Washington a Spokane Portland and Seattle freight derailed by a slide killed two men and injured two. Fireman Everett Ivilgon, 25, was recovered from the wreck while John Mulloy, a second engine fireman, is believed trapped. Engineers Jack Ranh and L P Litsch were scalded but not seriously hurt. Twenty five cars were involved with five crushed.
Washington officials said representatives from the United States and Canada will meet January 10 to discuss mutual civil aviation problems. The conference is not expected to address any proposed hour route linking the United States with Alaska via Canada, as no companies have officially notified plans.
Three wounded survivors of the bombed US gunboat Panay arrived in Manila aboard the destroyer Perry and were taken to the Naval Hospital. They are Lleut John Geist, Engineer Officer Arthur Anders, and J Hall Paxton, secretary to the American Embassy at Nanking. Geist and Anders suffer shrapnel wounds, Paxton a knee wound. Paxton expects to depart Wednesday on a clipper plane for vacation in the United States.
Nine passengers are scheduled to arrive this afternoon at the PAA Airport aboard a Pacific Alaska Airways Lockheed Electra piloted by E. Robbins and Walt Hall. Those arriving are Howard Thompson, Sonya West, C. Burnett, C. J. Newlin, Andrew Olson, George Miscovich, C. B. Linehan, Wayne Odney, and Robert McDonald.
AUCKLAND New Zealand Dec 27 Crewmen of the Samona Clipper checked the flying boat awaiting the signal to inaugurate the four days mail and express service between the antipodes and the United States. The 19 ton plane arrived yesterday after a three day journey from Honolulu. BANK REMODELING Work began today remodeling the cashier's cages of the B M Behrends Bank. Guy McNaughton cashier will have by window moved and the office space increased greatly.
A Seattle byline reports the Salmon Purse Seiners Union of the Pacific sent a resolution to the State Department demanding halting imports of Japanese fisheries products. The notice notes tensions between U S and Japan with Oregon and California figures cited and protests over tuna and albacore supplies.
J E Rivard a pioneer Alaska newspaperman and former U S commissioner at Wrangell died yesterday in Seattle after coming south to enter Veterans Hospital. He began in Nome in 1900 mined there moved to Chena founded a newspaper and served as Chena Postmaster. He later worked in Seward published the Daily Progressive Miners in Ketchikan and briefly ran a weekly in Petersburg.
The body of Floyd Ramey twenty one convict at the state penitentiary at Lansing was found in a coal car during unloading in Topeka Kansas. Warden Kirk Prather said Ramey planned to escape by hiding in the car.
King George gave assent to the wedding of Prince Paul of Greece heir presumptive to the throne and Princess Fredericka Luise of Brunswick at Sanbringham Castle England on December 27.
Robert W. Bender editor and manager of The Daily Alaska Empire died yesterday in Phoenix Arizona from a heart attack. Born in Tacoma Washington September 12 1896 he served in World War I and rose to sergeant in the Ambulance Corps. He later held journalism and theater management posts before moving to Juneau in 1932 to join Universal Pictures and Fox theatres.
Shanghai reports that Japan has imposed a strict death penalty regime in China’s conquered areas, extending military law to Americans and other foreigners. The measures raise treaty rights questions as Japan claims authority over nationals of third powers. Taiwan occupation announced amid rapid Japanese advances across Shangtung Province.

Ralph Anderson, 48, longtime Alaska United States Commissioner and steamer agent, died Christmas afternoon in Seattle after coming for medical aid. A resident of Alaska for 20 years, he was prominent on Cook Inlet and his wife Juanita had arrived from the north days earlier.
