Blizzard Prepares Along East Coast After Yuletide Toll

An Associated Press survey reports heavy Christmas week deaths from weather and accidents across the United States. Exposures froze in Minnesota and Wisconsin as temperatures plunged to near zero. Snowfalls blanket New York City, Chicago, and surrounding areas with several inches, while blizzard conditions threaten the East as a polar air mass shifts south.

60 Men Resume Work Today on Local Projects

Approximately 80 men resume jobs here this morning on PWA and CWA projects under the Alaska Road Commission. By next week 188 more will be added to the CWA list in Southeast Alaska and 94 elsewhere in the Territory under the Alaska Game Commission. At the Bureau of Fisheries headquarters applications for stream clearing work were being taken. Forty six men returned to the Gold Creek project and 17 on the Seatter Track were reassigned. About 24 tracks hauled rock in the Willoughby Avenue extension project funded by PWA. Seventy four miles of pear trees and 31 miles of peach trees are being cultivated in a northern Italian orchard.

Smiling Boy Enticed Away Then Murdered in Columbia

Robert Wiles, 49, auto mechanic, enticed Herbert Harris Jr., 18, from home in Columbia on a Friday afternoon. Harris’s body found in a shack nine miles from the city. J M Rushton, former meat cutter, implicated by Wiles. No charges filed. police pursue theory the boy was abducted and killed in a spirit of violence. Harris was son of two, connected to local chain store leadership.

Residents of Wales Island Resupplied After Shortage

Sixty residents on Wales Island near Prince Rupert BC were reprovisioned and found in good health after a BC Provincial Police boat returned from a supply mission. The ship, which delivered Christmas mail along with food, reported the island had ten whites and fifty Japanese fishermen among residents with almost no food prior to the aid.

Assassination strikes New York Armenian church leader

Archishop Leon Elizée Tourkast, head of the Armenian National Apostle Church in the Americas, was stabbed to death during Sunday morning services as he walked down the church aisle in his green and gold vestments. Topeka December 26 Runie Planey a 34 year old bond broker and principal in the Kanes million dollar bogus bond scandal abruptly ended his trial by entering a guilty plea. The defense failed to prove insanity. He pleaded to forging a $30,000 issue of Hululutieat Park bonds and selling them to Tedh Citizens State Bank of Topeka. Sentence deferred to December 30.
