Orphan Girl Dies From Alaska Kitchen Explosion
In Kanakanak Orphanage Dillingham Alaska Anna Yukhik 22 died from burns after a gasoline explosion in the orphanage kitchen Saturday morning. A kerosene lamp sparked the blaze and a can of gasoline replaced the kerosene. Anna used a match to light a flame, causing the explosion. She saved the building by throwing the burning can outside while two other girls helped extinguish the flames. Matron Nurse Green smothered the flames with blankets. Anna died 36 hours later, believed to have inhaled flames.

Local Pioneer T Nelson Dies in California After Illness
T P Nelson aged 67 longtime Juneau resident died Christmas night in Lac Anelvides California from pneumonia after a brief illness. Survived by Mrs Nelson two sons George and Fingene and their wives two daughters Mrs Nelson and Mrs Naylor, and Mrs Gortride Naylor. Services will be held in San Francisco with interment there. Nelson came to Juneau in 1887 and built Nelson’s Water Works and a tannery store, leaving for California with his wife in October after a stroke had limited him. THREE SHIPS RUSH TO AID IN GULF OF ALASKA
In a heavy gale 16 men aboard the tug Roosevelt battled danger after a collision 16 miles northeast of Cape St. Elias. The Northwestern and Vinalhaven joined the rescue effort towing and assisting through the night and into dawn. Attu later reached Roosevelt to aid and tow failed twice before a successful second line. The Northwestern remained in contact and the Starrett’s account continued.
