Dec 26 New York reports orders to guard the homes of wealthy and prominent citizens on Christmas Day. A bomb squad watched radicals at headquarters to deter further red demonstrations. Police dispersed several hundred Amnesty League demonstrators and seized placards, arresting several.
Print ed petitions from the Wobblies headquarters claim funds are raised to defend I W W members awaiting trial for the Centralia murders. The documents allege soldiers were shot as they tried to raid the I W W hall during the Armistice Day parade.
Portland police have no trace of the man who mailed a bomb in Christmas wrappings to Fred Fink, a Seattle musician and former Salt Lake City resident. Investigators believe a personal feud motivates the second assassination attempt.
Four men with national police records escaped from a Toledo jail when six visitors burst in firing at deputies. A deputy was wounded as guards were attacked and locked in cells during the break.
Lincoln Dec 26 The State Supreme Court upholds the constitutionality of a Nebraska law that curtails the use of foreign languages in public schools below the ninth grade. The ruling endorses restricting non English instruction for younger pupils in state schools.
Governor Louis F Hart refused Wilketon Coal and Coke Company's request for troops in Tacoma on December 26. Officials say county officers control the situation after reports that non union miners were attacked by striking workers. The coal company claims a union man was beaten.
Tacoma dispatch reports John Hewitt, treasurer of Wilkinson Coal & Coke Co. of Wilkeson, asking Governor Hart to rush troops after rumors of fighting between union and non-union miners, including ex-soldiers, with several men reportedly beaten.
Samuel McClure magazine publisher returning from abroad declares Ireland paradise and the most law abiding prosperous country. He notes well housed people and says outside newspapers exaggerate Ireland trouble.
In Sacramento Harvard University arrives in California in strong condition and eager to face Oregon in Pasadena on New Year’s Day. Oregon, after light training, enjoys Christmas on the beach as Harvard’s arrival creates keen interest among players. Amens Dec 26 A Court Martial has sentenced Robert Rockling former officer to ten years jail and 15 years exile plus a 10000000 franc fine. He commanded the Karlsruhe mines and directed pillage of eastern French factories during the war. Rockling known as the German steel king stripped French plants and sent machinery to Germany.
Washington moves to sale of all former German ships with requirement they sail under the U S flag. President Wilson orders seven large liners be delivered to England including the Graf Waldersee Pretoria Cap Finistere Mobile Pring Frederich Wilhelm and Kaiser in Augusta Victoria and the Imperator. The Inter Allied Shipping Commission had allotted the ships to England after U S troops were carried.
A car load of mail bound for the Sacramento valley from San Francisco was burned with only a few packages saved. In Butte on December 44, a thousand former Senator Clark employees received turkeys from him for Christmas.
