President Truman plans a nationwide Christmas greeting from his Independence Missouri home and will cue the lighting of a giant White House Christmas tree on the south lawn. The radio address at 2 16 p m Pacific will follow by a traditional Washington ceremony with hundreds present.
Sydney crowds rush to holiday spots to escape the peak heat. An estimated 300,000 will leave the city today for mountains or coasts as temperatures reach around 80 in the city and exceed 100 inland.
The Alaska Steamship Company announced that Steamer Alaska 10 West is rerouted to call Seward before Cordova and Valdez. Seward longshoremen planned no work from 7 p m Friday to 7 a m Sunday, which would have delayed the vessel 36 hours.
Seattle December 24 A Liberty ship named Abigail Adams formerly with Shephard Steamship Company has been chartered by Alaska Steamship Company for the Alaska trade. The vessel will load January 3 for Seward and Whittier as the Seattle to Alaska freighter service resumes after waterfront disputes.

The Weather Bureau predicted showers in lowlands and snow in the Sierra Nevada, while San Francisco remained mostly bare though light flakes appeared in Golden Gate Park. Beaumont near Los Angeles reported the season’s first snow in 28 years and through the interior San Joaquin Valley saw 11 years between snows amid freezing temperatures across the region.
