An Associated Press dispatch reports Greek forces advancing along the Adriatic coast north of Chimara as Italian defenses form near Tonara Pest. Greek troops push deeper with no clear outcome, while Italian rear retreat described as funerary and disorderly.
Manchester endured a second heavy air raid as German bombers struck the industrial city. A direct hit on an air raid shelter caused deaths and injuries while fires spread to hospitals shelters shops and homes. Rescue teams recovered seven bodies from a tavern wreckage as authorities assess broader damage.
In Seattle on December 24 the steam er Tyee of the Alaska Transportation Company was held at its pier and its Southeast Alaska sailing canceled after officers and crew conflict. Masters Mates and Pilots union members aboard issued an ultimatum refusing to sail with the current crew. The Sailors union supported the action, halting the ship’s planned voyage.
Vancouver December reports the Hotel Vancouver suspends all Christmas and New Year Eve celebrations as 48 waiters and bus boys strike for higher wages and union recognition. Manager W J Mylett says the hotel will sign an agreement with employees but not with the union which wants hiring and firing control. A union spokesman disputes the claim and plans affect hundreds of couples.
Washington dispatch recounts Rush Holt a West Virginia Democrat who after being elected in 1934 waited to take his seat until June 1935. The young senator quickly became a national figure with combative views and sharp clashes, earning a reputation for not compromising and even angering party leaders as he fought to push his convictions.
