Halibut Boat No. 242 owned by M. L. Toveen of Thane was abandoned Saturday afternoon at Point Retreat during a severe wind. The 32 foot craft sprang a leak and drifted toward Shelter Island lighthouse, then beached at Point Retreat. Toveen, en route to Juneau, was rescued by D. M. McDonald. the boat may have headed into Eagle River.

Eskimo mushing 75 miles brought word that Father F. J. Ruppert pastor of St. Joseph’s Church at Meme was frozen to death on Pilgrim River on December 16. He had ridden alone with a dog team to deliver Christmas greetings to 50 at the Hot Springs Orphanage. reindeer frightened the dogs and scattered them. The thermometer stood 30 degrees below zero. The priest’s body was found after a stormy trek and buried at the Orphanage. He had served Eskimos and whites during influenza epidemics and has relatives in San Francisco.
