Brotherhood Offers New Plan to Avert Rail Strike
Washington December 22 leaders of five railroad brotherhoods drafted a counter proposal to settle a wage dispute and avert a strike set for December 30. The plan cuts the initial three dollar minimum raise to sixty four cents but demands paid vacations and overtime after 40 hours for yardmen away from home. Overtime would add three dollars and ninety one cents to top yardmen, with away from home expenses estimated at up to twenty five dollars monthly. The proposal will be submitted to President Roosevelt as mediator when the White House accepts the delegation. Fifteen other nonoperating unions joined in calling the strike but there was no government intervention yet.
