The Associated Press reports the U S traffic death toll nears one million since automobil e use began, reaching 999 850 by 7 45 am PST. Early 34 hours tally shows 100 deaths, with heavy snow and icy roads restricting travel in northern states. Amateur drivers plan Christmas trips while some firms urge workers not to drive after drinking.
Henry Grunewald, known as the Dutchman, declines to testify in the congressional probe into a $50,000 tax fix extortion attempt. He answers only his birth year 1892 and cites counsel when asked birthplace or post-1892 details. A new Feb 13 subpoena was issued as subcommittee mulls contempt action. Grunewald reads a lawyer drafted statement while the hearing lasts.
Lovie Ander Ealy of Ketchikan received a two year federal term after pleading guilty to illegal possession of narcotics. Arrested in Ketchikan with marijuana and cocaine, her information led to arrests in Anchorage. U S Attorney P J Gilmore Jr said this was the first narcotics case since 1946 and pledged vigorous prosecutions.

Appeals court ordered negotiation between Alaska Airline and Civil Aeronautics Board to satisfy both sides with a ruling expected early March. Superior Court Judge Hugh C. Todd ruled that firms which bonded Oscar G. Olson, former Alaska treasurer, cannot recoup money paid out on his account. The American Surety and General Casualty sued Seattle First National Bank for 912, fully supported by territorial funds. Olson testified after leaving McNeil Island federal prison, serving a term for diverting public monies.

A sea disaster near Astoria Oregon left 11 persons missing after a fire swept the Danish vessel Erica anchored at the mouth of the Columbia River. Coast Guard units rescued 103 others, including 23 passengers and 80 crew, while survivors cited sparks from a shorted cable as the fire’s origin. Three lifeboats burned and only one was launched. one survivor noted passengers carried on with little panic and several wore night clothes. The vessel was 462 feet long, en route to Liverpool from Portland. The missing are believed trapped or drowned.
Seattle dispatch notes a rapid pre Christmas homecoming as three transports arrive within 24 hours. The Frederick Funston brought 50 Army, 197 Navy, four Marines and 80 Canadian soldiers plus 85 dependents. Gen H B Freeman carried 1,199 troops, and Gen Hugh J Gaffey began the rush with 1,168 troops aboard.
