Berlin is reported heavily blasted with explosions and fires as RAF raids widen across the city. British observers say the capital endures extensive bombing while German claims of a church hit surface amid widespread destruction.
President Roosevelt met with Representative Martin Dies amid mutual bickering over publicity and cooperation with the FBI. Roosevelt censured Dies for sniping at the bureau while urging better collaboration and warning that premature publicizing of subversive agents harms innocent people. Dies defended his league and charged Reds influence in CIO unions led by John L. Lewis.
State police investigate theft of Navy vessel construction plans from Russell Keefer, production engineer of the New York Whig building Corporation. Prints disappeared from his car while he dined at an inn near Schenectady after a visit to the General Electric plant.

Bangkok warned by radio that Thailand’s air force would bomb Desat, Pnompenh, and Saigon in French Indochina if French forces attack Bangkok. The warning followed reports of French planes bombing a town nearby and border clashes between the countries continue.
Territorial Highway Engineer William Hesse proposes a highway from Haines to Fairbanks drawing strong local interest. Ranger W A Chipperfield, returning from Haines and Klukwan aboard the Forester, notes CCC work including Indian village sidewalk construction at Haines.
Juneau's community Christmas tree has been set up with electric lights installed. Street Foreman Bert Lybeck announces the tree stands at the corner of Front and South Seward Streets. He thanks Frank and Ed Garrick for providing the home site for the tree.
Allied reports describe a mass bombing on Liverpool described as the heaviest attack since the war began. Casualties were believed light, while Berlin was bombed and the invasion ports of the Low Countries coastal areas attacked. Italian forces claimed shelling Greek positions and a noted land victory at an unidentified Albanian site.
Informed sources report that De Brinon on Petain's orders delivered France's firm refusal to alter the cabinet or readmit Laval. Berlin pressed for explanation, but Laval remains out as De Brinon is recognized by Germany. A separate item notes Felix Gray granting a marriage license to Henry Cropley and Anna Mason in Juneau.
The Daily Alaska Empire will publish a four section Christmas issue tomorrow as a special Sunday edition. It will be distributed to subscribers and sold at newsstands with holiday greetings and general news across all four sections.

Budget disputes with Capitol architect and carpentry costs leave many without stands including dogs that may be subject to Congress funding limits. The event aims for a simple ceremony with 200 000 visitors expected but only a minority will witness the oath.
Joseph Puff pioneer died at St Ann's Hospital from a lingering illness. He had been a patient since October, aged 78, and lived on Willoughby Avenue prior to admission. Remains are at the Charles W. Carter Mortuary awaiting funeral arrangements.
San Francisco December 21 Coast stevedore labor problems are resolved for defense needs with a new two year contract between the Waterfront Employers Association and CIO Longshoremen. The deal, praised by Harry Bridges and I A Gutormas, extends terms to two years and aims to prevent waterfront stoppages. Also filed in District Court are three divorce petitions: Beulah Frye Hickey vs James Vincent Hickey, Victor Grimm vs Florence Grimm, and Jennie Dominique vs Frank N Dominique for incompatibility and desertion.
The Alaska Unemployment Compensation Commission announces that due to the Christmas double holiday on December 24 and 25, benefit claimants with checks due on those days may report to Employment Service and collect on Monday December 23. Otherwise checks will be available Thursday December 26.
Berlin December 21 German Foreign Office spokesman said the question of US involvement in the British service and German use of US ships is pivotal. He claimed Cross proposes provoking war and noted Germany’s focus on America’s reaction amid rising tension and Britain’s reliance on U S assistance.
National Guardsmen of Juneau extend cordial invitation to the public to attend this evening's dance at the Elks ballroom. First social affair by the local company. Dancing starts at eight o'clock with music by Till Han Uggen and her orchestra. Ballroom decorated for the occasion. Guardsmen in uniform and ladies in long gowns. Semi formal event.
