Canadian Air Force to send 6000 personnel overseas

Ottawa December 21 Defense Minister Rogers announced that Royal Canadian Air Force and auxiliary units totaling over 6,000 personnel will be sent overseas to support the First Canadian Division now abroad. The Toronto squadron will be equipped with the latest aircraft and commanded by Squadron Leader Van Vilet of Winnipeg.

Two Planes Forced Down On Flights

In Nome Alaska on December 21 pilot Curley Martin of Miron Air Service radioed that he was forced to land in bad weather on a Hamilton to St Michael flight. A second plane left to deliver a new ski shock absorbing unit for Martins damaged gear. A third plane with three passengers was forced down by a broken oil line near Nulato on a flight from Fairbanks. Dog teams with oil were dispatched to aid, as deep snow blankets interior Alaska.

Nazi Claims On Sinkings Denied By Allied Chiefs

London reports a high level Allied naval meeting at the Admiralty as London-Berlin dispute over Germany intensified air raids. The British Admiralty said in three days 35 vessels were attacked, three naval units failed to sink, one coastal steamer and six fishing trawlers were sunk, while the 13,600-ton Cap Norte was captured in the South Atlantic. A Swedish freighter Mays struck a mine and sank in the North Sea, and Danish sailors landed in Norway after the British trawler Trinidad was sunk by German planes off Scotland.

Lepke convicted in narcotics case as head of smuggling syndicate

Louis Lepke Bichalter, named as the top man in a "$10,000,000 international smuggling syndicate," was convicted in Federal Court of conspiracy to violate narcotics laws. He faces up to two years in prison and a $10,000 fine. nine other indictments could total 468 years and $180,000 in fines. No Concession On Copper In Chile Trade Pact

The state Department announced no concession will be made on copper or copper products in the Chile trade agreement. The decision was made public to inform lawmakers and the public, with Representative Charles H. Leavy saying it may improve congressional support for the reciprocal trade program.

Dutch Air Battle Endangers Utrecht. Foreign Planes Seen

Dutch air force clashed today with aircraft of unknown foreign origin over Utrecht and nearby areas. The encounter began at noon after invaders reportedly crossed from Germany’s border region. A smoke screen failed to conceal the attackers as heavy anti-aircraft fire and smoke from shells were observed. Earlier, three foreign planes were seen over Veluwe in the border province of Gelderland, prompting Netherlands anti aircraft batteries to engage and chase them.

Tyrolean residents assured they may stay on native soil

Italian and German authorities published an agreement today confirming Tyrolean inhabitants can remain in the Italian Tyrol rather than take German citizenship. The pact also references prior arrangements about repatriation of Germans in the Tyrol, tied to the World War era.

German Liner Columbus Scuttled Near U S Waters, Capt Dahen Claims

Wilhelm Daher, commander of the German liner Columbus, says he scuttled the 32,500 ton ship to prevent it from falling into British hands.
