Madrid December reports that martial law remains in theory only as troops have withdrawn from city streets and are concentrated in barracks. The government stays alert for any disturbances while Premier Berenguer's cabinet plans changes in coming months.
In Torr City on Saturday afternoon three men disarmed a special officer and terrified a crowd as they seized $31,623 from an uptown bank in four minutes. They fled with cash while workers and customers were left unharmed. Later a jewelry office was robbed with a bound owner and employee, gems valued over $30,000 taken in the afternoon.
Seward Alaska December scene notes Father Niccone arranging for three young Russian monks now in Greece to join a project inviting Northern European farmers to homestead in the Matanuska Valley. The monks are seasoned farmers displaced by Soviet actions and will be funded to relocate to Alaska.
Noel Wien and co pilot Siguard Ayre land at Atlin BC while flying from Minnesota to Nome for Christmas. They plan to continue to Dawson next, expecting to reach there by Sunday.
Karyan Freiter, 28, arrived from Boston to deliver gifts to relatives when his plane crashed in Philadelphia's northeastern woods. He was burned to death as the aircraft went down this afternoon.

The American Legion plans a major boxing card with seven bouts, headlined by Miles Murphy versus Joe Manila and slugger Weaver facing Kid Samora. Dolly Gray’s overweight bout with Kid Eddy Ryan featured substitute Smoke Jack Davis, who weighed in under 125 pounds. Ryan won by Judges' decision as Davis briefly entered the ring. John A. Berglund a bachelor hotel proprietor was shot and killed by two unidentified men who awakened him Saturday morning after he resented a request. The assailants fled and Berglund's wife lay nearby as two roomers witnessed the shooting.
Twelve Italian seaplanes of Balbo's air expedition have arrived in Cartagena Spain after a stormy journey. General Balbo, Italian air minister and expedition leader, plans to depart Sunday for Morocco as the second stop on the Rio de Janeiro flight.
The government schooner Boxer reached Seattle on Saturday afternoon carrying tin ore, reindeer meat, hides, ivory and curios from Point Barrow Alaska. Captain Whitlam called the voyage one of the most trying in his career.
Lieut Lester J Maitland to face a general court martial next Monday on a charge of being drunk while under treatment at Port Sam Houston Hospital. The announcement came from Eighth Corps headquarters in San Antonio Texas. The Salt Lake City police recovered 3000 stolen bicycles last year.
Yuletide celebrations start today in Juneau as the city tree at Triangle Corner lights up at 4 PM. Mayor Judson and city workers installed the tree wiring with Alaska Electric Light and Power. Mrs. W E Ellis leads group singing with five carols printed for the crowd.

In dense fog off Laso Island the Danish steamer Oberon collided with the Arcturus and sank. Captain Erick Miest lost his wife and four year old daughter. he was rescued by his brother's ship holding his daughter's body. Search for survivors abandoned. about forty believed drowned in flames and wreckage.
The motorship Northland under Capt. Leonard Williams left Juneau at 2 p.m. yesterday and arrived Seattle by Friday night, carrying nine passengers to Petersburg Ketchikan and Seattle. A Christmas tree party with Santa Claus was held aboard in the forward salon, distributing oranges apples and cookies to local children.

Tulsa dispatch reports the Federal Trade Commission found mothballs placed in gasoline do not improve mileage, remove carbon, reduce exhaust odor, reduce knocking, or increase engine efficiency. The FTC notes tablets with mothball ingredients in fuel offer no benefits.
The Associated Press started a daily exchange of news between New York and Mexico City via more than 4 direct leased wires. This establishes the longest international leased land wire for press service, running over 3 000 miles between the two centers.
Portland officers report the County Grand Jury adjourned after seven true bills and seven indictments on lesser charges in a secret investigation of first degree murder tied to Nelson Bowles and secretary Irma Paris. The session closed without resuming an indictment.
Cleveland Ohio December 20 New negotiations have been signed which may lead to the affiliation of the major railroad labor brotherhoods with about 500000 members into the American Federation of Labor The announcement was made today by Brotherhood officials
In Cleveland on December 20 a voluntary job sharing plan begins among three railroad workers unions the Trainmen Engineers and Firemen to reduce mileage pay and create work for idle members. The unions report 40 000 idle workers nationwide with 20 000 still unemployed after initial reductions on several roads. The Brotherhoods aim for a 5 hour day while seeking broader readjustment across lines.
President Hoover signed two emergency bills, the Public Works for 116 million and the drought loans for 45 million, with funds to be spent promptly. The public works program allocates 80 million for road construction and authorizes administration to allocate funds if emergencies arise. Most money is expected to be spent before July 1.
The Senate confirmed the last three nominees for the Federal Power Commission, completing the Hoover administration slate. The new members are Chairman George Otis Smith of Maine, Frank R. McNineh of North Carolina, Marcel Garsaud of Louisiana, Ralph B. Williamson of Washington, and Claude Draper of Wyoming. McNineh and Garsaud are Democrats, the others Republicans. The commission will be organized immediately to replace the outgoing panel amid on floor opposition to some nominations.
