Bridges Faction Wins ILWU Local 10 Vote

In San Francisco the right wing candidate Phil Sandin defeated Henry Schmidt by about 100 votes to retain leadership of Local 10 with 6,000 members. Bridges and Schmidt, once convicted of perjury over Bridges’ Communist claim, are free on bond awaiting appeal as union members clash over speeches and policy.

Lumber barge shipment to Whittier under Army tug

A 208-foot army cargo barge is loaded with finished lumber at the Juneau Lumber Co. dock for shipment to the army installation at Whittier. The barge is towed by the Army tug ATA 241 under Lt. Dewey Stack, an Alaska waters veteran. The tug and barge depart tomorrow afternoon with an 18-man crew onboard.

Air National Guard Groups To See Duty

Five Air National Guard groups will be called into Federal service on February 1, with designation of units and bases kept secret for security. Five groups have already been brought into service since October, as the Defense Department adds two ground divisions to the existing four. In Spokane, the 116th Fighter Squadron and the 116th Weather Detachment have been activated, with members reporting to Geiger Field on February 1.
