American submarines continued relentless attacks in the Pacific, reports the Navy Department. Seven enemy ships were sunk including a large tanker, a large cargo ship, a medium transport, and a trawler, raising total enemy ships attacked to 155.
Joe Werner, chairman of the Juneau Ski Club outdoor committee, says conditions up to the second meadow on Douglas Island are the best in years. Tomorrow skiers will focus on the slalom hill and coffee will be served by the Ski Club. Upper bowl snow is deep and not good for skiing, discouraging attempts on the upper cabin.
The War Department proposed recruiting an Austrian Legion led by Crown Prince Otto, provoking opposition from Jugoslavs and Czechs in the United States. Cordell Hull and other officials resisted, but FDR overrode them to allow Otto’s recruitment effort. Discussions at the Vatican followed Ambassador Taylor’s visit and a bishops’ endorsement of Roosevelt’s war policies.
London dispatch reports the Royal Air Force shifted from Italian targets to bomb Germany for the third time this month. Heavy weather hampered operations and eighteen bombers are missing. German bombers conducted raids over England, killing nine Christmas shoppers in a store and leaving others missing.
Chief of Police B H Manery told the City Council the cold snap is causing caulking to drop out of unattended vessels in the small boat harbor and three have sunk. Boat owners must inspect their ships or be responsible for raising them and clearing channels if they sink. The council approved liquor licenses for the new year and authorized buying 1,500 feet of hose for the Fire Department, per Chief Mulvihill. Letters praised Fire and Police cooperation with government officials in recent cases.
The Sunday School of The Northern Light Presbyterian Church will collect Christmas foods for Haines House, year Presbyterian School. Gifts should be brought to the church and placed in a vestibule box from December 20 until Christmas. Canned foods are preferred for easier packing and shipping.
Initiation ceremony directed by Grace Berg Worthy Advisor will be at 7 30 tonight in the Scottish Rite Temple. A Christmas party follows with Betty Bennett organizing the program. Members are reminded to bring and exchange gifts.
Juneau youngsters flocked to the Tulks Annual Christmas Party for the Kids of Gastineau Channel at the Capitol Theatre. Many brought canned foods and a sack of sugar for holiday baskets distributed by the Elks to needy families. special movies and Santa Claus gifts capped the event. William Franks also attended.
Public Health Nurse Stephanie Bogdon invites all interested to a maternity class on Monday December 21 from 2 to 3 p m in the Health Center of the Territorial Building. A display of mother and baby wardrobes will be shown. The following week the topic will be The Baby's Bath.
An Alaska Star Airlines plane bound for Anchorage took off this morning with pilot Chett McLean and co-pilot H L Kaesemeyer aboard. Also on board were passengers Earl McGinty Madeline Haines Mrs G Krause A C Brandes and Hans Arp as they departed for the Westward. Buy defense stamps.

Carlson as First Vice President Ted Laughlin as Second Vice President Al Zenger as Secretary John Beck as Treasurer Jack Langseth as Historian Dean G. G. Rice as Chaplain and Walter B. Bathe as Sergeant-at-Arms. Delegates named for the Grand Council in Juneau begin Feb 8 with Henry Redon Robert Kenny and Dean C. E. Rice. alternates Mike Seston J C Hayes and William B Tatehfield. Charles W. Garter elected Installing Officer for Jan 22 ceremony. An auditing committee of W Carlson Jack Langseth and Henry Roden will audit the books.
A Stockholm Allehanda broadcast reported Churchill plans to depart for Washington today for talks with President Roosevelt. The claim, attributed to British sources in Lisbon, gained rapid circulation via Berlin radio but lacks independent confirmation.
The American Legion and Auxiliary Joint Christmas party will be held Monday night December 21 at the Odd Fellows Hall. It is for Legionnaires and their wives, Auxiliary members and their husbands, all veterans of World War I and the Spanish American War. Attendees are asked to bring a small gift to help Santa Claus.

Miss Irene Jones leaves for the south to wed Capt Joe Walton of Pan American Airways Maske Division. A former downtown grade school teacher, she resigned after the engagement announcement. Richard Sawyer of Exirson Tyleh company also heads south with brother Sgt Royal Sawyer to visit relatives near Seattle during holidays.
Washington says Army heavy bombers struck Japan’s base at Kiska two days ago, causing heavy explosions and fires. Liberator bombers attacked shore installations, while Fortresses with fighters shelled targets near Munda in the Salamwas area in separate raids. results not reported.
