In a perilous Atlantic rescue, the passenger liner New York and aid from the Europa saved 16 crew of the Norwegian freighter Sisto after a crippling storm 300 miles off Ireland. Lifeboat shuttles and heavy seas tested all hands as the ship teetered toward collapse.
London reports the mobilization of about 3,500 troops from Great Britain Italy Sweden and The Netherlands for the Saar plebiscite on January 13. Contingents are expected to reach their posts before Christmas with units en route or ready to move in the coming days.
Eugene R. Black former Governor of the Federal Reserve Board died at his Atlanta home from a heart attack. He was 61 and had recently returned to head the Sixth Federal Reserve District after stepping down as chair. In Flemington New Jersey Edward Really says Hauptmann’s counsel will seek to compel testimony and may appeal to President Roosevelt if needed.
City School Superintendent A B Phillips announced a Christmas program at the grade school auditorium Thursday evening at 7 o clock for parents of Juneau Public High School pupils and pre school children. A separate Friday program will be held for grade schoolers due to space limits.
White Sulphur Springs reports that a likely platform recommendation for American commerce chiefs favors substituting a dole for the current work relief program. Proponents argue it would be a cheaper and better method to aid the jobless nationwide.
Berlin reports a circulating rumor that Adolf Hitler was shot and wounded by a girl while in an automobile en route to California. The tale, passed by associates in Washington and Oregon, notes weather and a return to Juneau around January 10.

N. S. Troast, architect and district superintendent for the U S Bureau of Indian Affairs, visited Cordova to Nome inspecting PWA projects across interior, northern and western Alaska. He piloted planes and ships visiting towns including Fairbanks, Kotzebue, Diomede Island, Nome, Unalakleet, Shaktoolik, and Point Barrow, selecting sites for new schools and a hospital. The Juneau Chamber of Commerce will hear his account along with R E Robertson’s committee plans for 1935 after a Nome visit and fire rehabilitation work.
New York trading opened with a selling wave in utilities dragging most prices down while the rest of the market held mostly fractional losses. Closing quotes show Alaska Juneau mine at 19 percent and General Motors at 31, United States Steel 367, Kennecott 16, Calumet and Hecla 3, Armour 5, and American Can 107 with broad dullness in the session. Pred Mespell of Mespell and Company travels south for the holidays aboard the steamer Alaska, with his two brothers, to join family at Medfra on the Kusko Kwim. Harry Flaherty, long-time Skagway and Whitehorse resident, is also southbound on the Princess Norah for annual vacation.
Mrs. Harold McKee, 35, Sterling Ul, had a single yawn before sleep last night. She has endured eight days of yawning. Physicians say she is well along the road to recovery as the yawn was natural.
In Hall England on December 19 Mrs Ethel Gaunt a 42 year old mother of two was hanged for poisoning her husband after appeals to the King and Queen failed. She maintained innocence as a jury urged clemency and her aged father and son bid farewell before the scaffold.
Amelia Earhart Putnam sails Saturday for Honolulu in a plane that could cross the Pacific back to California. Her husband George Palmer Putnam says the transpacific leg is very probable though not certain.
Deputy U. S. Marshal Judson Brown and Mrs Brown welcomed a six and one half pound baby girl born Saturday at Government Hospital. The father reports his wife and child are progressing nicely as he shares cigars with colleagues on the fifth floor of the Pederu and Territorial Building.
The Christmas Ship visited Juneau today with Santa Claus aboard, greeting 1,500 locals in the Alaska Steamship Company Yu kon social hall. Children and adults lined the gang planks for candy apples oranges and gifts as the ship stopped at Wrangell and Ketchikan with visitors totals of 800 and 1,100 respectively. A Seattle send-off and playful mishap in Ketchikan preceded the Yukon departure, while a six piece band played aboard. Continued on Page Two.
The Japanese Privy Council unanimously urged Emperor Hirohito to scrap the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922 and observers expect a formal abrogation notice likely between Christmas and New Year. The move would permit changing the 5 5 8 naval ratio after a two year period. A separate London conference report notes the talks among Britain United States and Japan have ended without an immediate new treaty.
Washington reports concrete remedies are sought as Army and Navy officers warn of Communist efforts to spread dissatisfaction and mutiny in the armed forces. The House committee investigating UnAmerican Activities is urged to approve a law to punish urging soldiers or sailors to violate their oath of allegiance.
