Irish Emigration From Free State to U S Slows
Dublin December 18 The emigration rate from the Free State to the United States is steadily declining. For the year ended June 1929 there were 8 000 fewer emigrants than the quota allowed. In July the quota was reduced to 17 000 and subsequent months show the quota still exceeds the number of emigrants. Visas granted fell to two hundred below the monthly quota. Even if all applicants were passed the quota would not be filled. American Consul General Cornelius Ferris in Dublin says emigrants are of a lower type and many are rejected for physical defects or illiteracy. He adds able bodied men now find decent work at home.
