Early Morning Fire Destroys Heidelberg Saloon Building

A fire caused by burning grease on a restaurant stove swept through the Old A and I Cafe and the Heidelberg saloon at Front and Franklin, destroying the building and wiping out three nearby businesses. Loss estimated around 17 thousand dollars, with damage to the Palace of Sweets and threats to Juneau Hardware Co. and the Boston Store. fire officials contained the blaze within 40 minutes after alarm.

Steamer Runa sinks with twenty two dead in gale

Coast Guard officials report the Norwegian steamer Runa foundered last Saturday off Frying Pan Shoals during a gale near Norfolk. A lifeboat with all occupants dead was recovered. Two lifeboats were launched. one picked up by the tanker Mills with four survivors. A fifth man was rescued from the water.

San Diego Dec 18 The four American army aviators selected for the globe flight will face a race against six navy aviators. The navy plans to start from Hampton Roads about February 15, two weeks before the army. Booze party ends in deaths in Brattle room

Eugene A. Childe a prominent local attorney former state legislator and Police Judge and Mrs Clara Lien a Vancouver dancer musician were found dead in a gas filled Brattle room after a booze party. They likely died more than twelve hours earlier. Deputy Coroner said evidence of a drinking party was present. Mrs Childe had wintered in Los Angeles.
