A fatal shooting ends a rocky romance case involving John Bandy the local juke box operator. Rose LaRue will testify at a coroner's inquest in Felix Gray's office at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
Overnight Washington shifts from boom town to war town with khaki troops and patrols between the White House and State Department. Blacked out Capitol, Civilian Defense volunteers, security at government doors, and intensified police presence mark the mood as President's conference tone grows grave. A raid on German correspondent Kurt Sell’s residence and heightened guard credentials add to the tense scene.
A special board appointed by the President to investigate the surprise Japanese attack on Hawaii met in Secretary of War Stimson's office to organize and discuss procedure but broke up after half an hour. Board members said they would comment once all members were present. Admiral Standley had not yet arrived. Other members include Maj Gen. McCoy Brig. Gen. McNarney Rear Admiral Reeves and Supreme Court Justice Owen J. Roberts.
From Buenos Aires dated December 17 a German plan to sabotage railways serving Chilean ports Arica and Antofagasta to block Bolivian metal shipments to the United States was foiled. The Bolivian government has imposed strict censorship, but authorities did not link this to the reported Nazi plot.
The Justice Department announced two consent decrees filed in federal court Newark New Jersey to dissolve German cartel ties and open a Latin American US chemical industry without cartel interference. Four corporations and five officers pleaded nolo contendere to anti-trust informations and were fined a total of $54000.
Soviet dispatches report German forces in headlong retreat as Red Army recaptures Kalinin, 95 miles northwest of Moscow, with evidence of German wintering plans in the Kalinin zone. Moscow says pursuing troops annihilate fleeing enemy. Germany claims line shortening on eastern front.
The Navy Department announced that no personnel were injured in the Japanese attack on Johnson Island. Officials described the assault as weak and noted the attack occurred yesterday with no casualties reported.
Helena Montana December 17 A responding officer reported a man seen hanging on a lamp post at Edwards and Main streets but found the man merely tired and sent him to a hotel for rest. The lighthearted incident was noted by the officer in his report.
Canadian customs inspector stationed at Tulsequah British Columbia, Bill Nelson, has traveled south for vacation, arriving by plane. Defense bonds purchased.
Ensign Irving Thompson, 22, son of Mr and Mrs Andrew Thompson of Ketchikan, was killed when Japanese bombers sank the U S Arizona at Pearl Harbor. A Naval Academy graduate, he grew up in Ketchikan and was active in local school affairs. The Navy named the date of death as December 7 during the attack on Hawaii.
British fronts in North Africa report heavy pressure on Hitler's desert forces amid sand storms. A fascist submarine carrying General Lami and 19 officers from Libya to Italy was sunk in the central Mediterranean. Of 53 aboard, the general was not among the survivors.
Japanese warships bombers and land batteries pound besieged Hongkong. Reuters says Japanese forces seized Macao, 45 miles southwest of Hongkong, as London reports gloom over Hongkong’s resistance. Dispatches state Americans on the island are all right and fortifications are strong enough to resist invasion.
Washington December 17 House Democratic leader John W McCormack of Massachusetts rebuked the House Military Committee and urged passage of legislation to require military training for men from 1 to 44 inclusive rather than 21 to 44. He criticized the committee for rejecting the President and War Department request to induct men below 21, saying we cannot have too many leaders in this crisis.

Chinese forces claim successful attacks from the mouth to the besieged Hong Kong compelling Japanese reinforcements to shift to the Tamshui rear area. Tamshui lies about 28 miles north of Kowloon near the Canton Kowloon railway. Japan’s Kowloon capture cited as costly, with British fire destroying much equipment while Chinese pressure grows near Shanghai in Checkiang Province.
The Office of Production Management extended the restriction on manufacturing automobile tires and tubes for sale until the first week in January, allowing only top defense orders. Thieves plundered the Hong Kong home of Police Inspector A. L. Hopkins, stealing silver ornaments and the inspector's medals.
London December 17 The Air Ministry News Service said Japan uses Messerschmitt 109 and 110 fighters in the air battle for Malaya. Earlier reports said Japan built fighters based on Messerschmitt design but there was no evidence of German plants.
An Overseas Affairs Ministry report states 104 people were killed and 164 injured in a quake affecting Southern Formosa. The disaster damaged 612 houses and harmed railways and other communications, with the morning announcement noting further impacts.
Patrolman Earl Holman reports a plasterer named Harry was too drunk to drive so his car was parked in a garage by friends to prevent him from injuring himself or others. The plasterers requested the intervention to keep him from plastering against a wall or similar danger.
British headquarters at Singapore acknowledged Japanese troops have landed at Sarawak on the northeast coast of Borneo, within the white rajah Sir Charles Brooke’s dominion. Sarawak lies in bombing range of Singapore, which is about 600 miles from Manila.

US naval forces tighten the blockade around Japan as Hart reports submarines active with two of three attacks successful. In Luzon, Manila HQ says 26 Japanese planes destroyed at Vigan with Ka Hulo Maui shelling dismissed as damage to a pineapple company. No discernible enemy activity in the Philippines in the past day.
President Roosevelt urged industry leaders and unions to curb wartime strikes in a wartime address. He pressed for unanimous agreement by Friday night on a plan to speed up defense production without delay, saying he wants speed as the nation fights at war. The report notes the Austrailian national flower, the wattle, mentioned in context.
