Tokyo protests Moscow for arresting Japanese in Russia and holding them without trial. Tokyo reports Vladivostok fortifications with 18 submarines and 4 destroyers planned, plus 600 pilots and 13 planes moved there in the past week.
In San Francisco harbor two desperadoes Ralph Roe 29 of Duncan Oklahoma bandit and Theodore Cole 23 of Stroud Oklahoma kidnapping escaped from the prison by breaking two panes in a machine shop window and slipping into dense fog. Coast Guard police boats and prison craft scoured the area with searchlights expecting to locate them or their bodies after they vanished beyond a gate and a sheer cliff.
Senator Robert R Reynolds of North Carolina said he may seek a Senate investigation into whether wealthy industrialists deliberately spurred the economic recession out of hostility to President Roosevelt.
In Brooklyn on December 17, Byron White of Colorado led the nation with 122 points, Sid White of Brooklyn scored 113. Byron dominated the Tinyame event to finish ahead of Sid in the touchdown tally.
Anchorage, Dec 17. Harlan A. Gubser of the U S Biological Survey reports wolves and caribou are wiping out Eskimo reindeer along the Noatak and Kobuk rivers. He warns the reindeer could disappear within three years unless killings halt. Caribou drift south and merge with deer herds. wolves continue indiscriminate killing.
A high diplomatic source said Britain will reinforce its fleet in Oriental waters early next month with or without similar US action. A Cabinet decision expected as the special session meets next Wednesday. Unwarranted attacks on British shipping and unsatisfied Japanese replies spur the move. the US has led, while Britain lags. The American Asiatic Fleet has reportedly increased.
Dec 17 Gian Japanese war threatens to spread south to the China Coast with fur and attacks beyond Nanking. A Japanese communique boasted of entry into the former capital as forces pursue peace aims. Chinese sources expect an invasion of Southern Kwangtung province and an attack on Canton, northwest of Hong Kong. Generalissimo Chiang Kai shek urged continued resistance, stressing rural China as key to future victory.
St. Ann's Parochial School will stage The Magi's Gift an operetta by Clara Grubb Monday evening. The program features all students with choruses and character roles as Mrs. Henry Harmon directs and Mrs. A J Goodman accompanies. Other cast lists include children, townsfolk, angels, kings, shepherds, and carolers with several local names noted. Meteorologist Howard Thompson directs Wilkins search weather updates from Juneau as Barrow relays six hour data for better flight conditions tomorrow.
Washington December 17 President Roosevelt declined to endorse a public referendum before war. He stated a referendum on declaring war would not align with the United States form of government. A petition by Representative Ludlow sought a Constitutional amendment to force a House vote on war referendum.
Salvation Army announces a rummage sale at the Salvation Army Hall on Wednesday to raise funds for a Christmas treat for children. Lieutenant Margaret Morris leads the effort calling for donations to be delivered or brought to the Army citadel on Willoughby Avenue.
Canadian Pacific steamer Princess North arrives this afternoon with three days mail aboard and Northland sailing from Seattle this forenoon also carries three days mail. The Alaska sailing from Seattle Sunday morning will have two days mail aboard.
Edwin Sutton and Walter Heisel return to Suttons aboard the Princess Norah after attending the Thirty third Degree Masons convention in Spokane Washington. The gathering began December 10 and finished with the formal conferring of degrees. Mrs Sutton escorted her husband on the trip.

An Alaska naval defense expansion is indicated by a November 20 presidential order reserving about 8 square miles near Kodiak for Navy use. The site with waters of Womens Bay may serve as a seaplane base, while broader plans for a separate Alaska naval district and a possible 100 million dollar appropriation are debated in Congress.
Extraordinary claims from survivors arriving in Extra Wounds as they describe Japanese war plan machine gunning of small American boats carrying survivors from the bombed Panay. They say Japanese detachments on Yangtze banks set fire to the doomed gunboat and that planes also fired on rescue boats. The Oahu bore the dead and wounded, with about 60 survivors aboard and 15 in serious condition. Navy investigators gathered statements from survivors and crew aboard at Pootung.
