On December 2 German bombers sank seven United Nations merchant ships at Bari Italy, including five American vessels. About 1,000 people were killed or wounded, among them 87 American naval personnel. Secretary of War Stimpson disclosed the figures at a news conference after corroborating reports from other sources.
Former Kansas governor Alf Landon faced pointed questions from Republican freshmen about Wendell Willkie and the 1944 nomination. He spoke dullly on New Deal policy, denied any deal with Moscow talks, and recalled a near bid for Secretary of War in 1940 ending with a canceled luncheon after a White House meeting.

In a Pearl Harbor report Adm. Nimitz says Liberators bombed Taroa airfield in Miloelap Atoll and ahangar fires began while 17 Zeros were engaged. One enemy plane shot down, four likely destroyed, five damaged. three Liberators lightly damaged but returned home. Japanese raids hit Tarawa and Makin with minor injuries. The Gilberts and Marshalls lie about 300 miles apart.
A Alaska Coastal Airlines flight yesterday to Excursion Inlet carried Murrill Boggs as a passenger and returned to Juneau with Roy Dicteca Otis J. Armstrong Lt. Col. H. P. Crane and Warren Caro. A Sitka return brought Irene Deveney Harold McRobert and Charles Bert. Passengers to Haines included Mrs. E Gallt Holmes and W Seeley. Returning were Charles Brouillette Mr and Mrs F Willard and W L Seeley.
Six candidates were initiated by the Elks Lodge last evening at the Elks Hall. One candidate represented the Kelso Washington Lodge. Frank Dufresne of the Alaska Game Commission presented Ellis Antlers mounted by Ed Peyton. Recipients included E Lincoln for Kelso Lodge and B G Stevens W R Peterson Joe W Erickson L D McMullen and F Berge for Juneau Lodge.
Prime Minister Winston Churchill suffers a patch of pneumonia in the Middle East while at the Teheran talks. Attlee says his condition is grave but stable as specialists attend and daily bulletins will follow. A Cairo meeting with Tsouderos is noted in British broadcasts.
A Dublin agency dispatch circulating in London claims President Roosevelt's plane made a forced landing in the Azores en route to the Cairo and Tehran conferences. No official confirmation was available as the President traveled to Cairo. The message cites a Berlin source alleging a damaged engine forced a landing on Terceira.
Street Superintendent Bert Lybeck and his crew hoisted the Community Christmas tree at the corner of Front Street and Seward. Lights will be added and the tree will be ready for the community exercises next Sunday at 4 o clock.
