Washington December 15. The Senate defeated the first attempt to alter the administration currency bill by a 40 to 35 vote. The result signals the bill’s safety from amendments. On final passage it will gain support from several senators who backed today’s amendments.
Forty students meet at the Arctic Brotherhood building to organize the Sourdough club at the University of Washington. Leaders include Emil E. Hurja as Sourdough Chief and Calvin C. Hazelet as Vice Chief. Honorary members may include faculty and Alaska and Yukon service figures. Letters of congratulation arrive from Gov. Strong and others.
Nome resident Frank Johnston, a longshoreman and North Alaska figure, launched a campaign for the marshal post held by H. L. Faulkner. Friends circulate Juneau petitions, citing a past alliance with Senator James Hamilton Lewis, who aided Johnston early in his political career and in later campaigns.
Camp Fire Girls gathered to cut paper shapes for a candy sale and jumble stall at the Presbyterian church basement. The event features homemade candy, Christmas-tree items, artistic cards, calendars, lamp shades, and dinner-table favors, with afternoon tea and sales starting Monday at 2 30 p m. Contributions of cakes or candy are welcome, left with Miss Edith Kempthorne or at the church Monday morning.
Paul T Benson and his bride Paula Hubbard returned from Ketchikan aboard the Alameda Saturday night. The bride, once a government hospital nurse and now a Metlakaketla teacher, is remembered in Juneau. Mr Benson serves as an assayer at the Perseverance mine after years at the Tacoma smelter. The couple now reside in new Perseverance company cottages for married employees.
Earle C Jameson vice president of Dispatch Publishing and news editor of the Dispatch is in St Ann s hospital undergoing a minor operation.
The Humboldt departed yesterday morning carrying Mrs. L. Carlson, A. Hayman, Miss Carrie Oden, H. B. Thorpe, and six second class travelers bound for the South.
Mrs Sherman departs for New York to acquire spring and summer millinery stock while winter hats are marked down to clear room for new merchandise. A Xmas display of art goods and gifts is featured at 131 Front Street. Lieut E E McCammon leads the university military science department and is the club’s only honorary member.
Olaf Swenson, part owner of the Belvidere, reports the Karluk may have been crushed in the ice after Captain Bartlett left the shelter of the ground ice. Swenson traveled from the ship to Fairbanks via Fort Yukon, estimating the Karluk’s last sighting August 14 off Barter Island. The Elvira and the Belvidere crew plan to head south as other vessels break free from the ice.
Mrs. Lawrence J. Reedy died after an operation in a San Francisco hospital. In poor health for years, she was sent there last fall for treatment. The news reached Juneau by cable, and Mr. Reedy departed for the South at three this morning. Her death mourned by friends across Alaska. she had joined her husband in the North in 1898 and came to Juneau a year ago.
Tonight in the Masonic hall of the Odd Fellows building John Orchard Past Grand Patron of Texas will perfect the organization of a new chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Juneau The preliminary meeting was held about two months ago Officials will be elected and installed and the chapter placed on a working basis.
The Orpheum features The Strange Case of Elsie Mason with Alice Joyce as the lead, Pathe's Weekly Mitt and Jeff, Dynamited Love a quirky comedy with Crane Wilbur, Doctor Bridget starring John Bunny, and repeats the same program tonight through Wednesday with Red Man's Honor An Unsuspected Honeymoon and The Chaperone on the bill.
The Grand shows Sense of Duty a two reel military drama with big battles between U S troops and Indians. Crowds packed last night and plans for tonight promise similar action. Also screening Gaumont Weekly and The Brother of the Bat a comedy.
The Altar Society of the Catholic Church will hold a fancy work and goody sale Thursday at 2 p.m. in Mr. Shepard's insurance office in the Valentine building. The Junean Hardware Company store will be open evenings from now until after the holidays.
Eastern financial papers report on the Alaska Ebner Gold Mines reorganizing plan. A new $7.5 million corporation would issue bonds and stock with a five year conversion, plus measures to refund old bonds and fund exploration and development. Foreclosure of assets and a New York receivership tied to Bristol Consolidated Mines are noted, with H. W. Martin of Boston named as a creditor.
Advices by cable from Juneau today say the Good Ship Jefferson will be Santa Claus from the North. The sailing date is set for 9 pm tomorrow, with arrival here on the 20th and a return to Seattle on Christmas Eve.
Col. Abraham Andrews, age 91, longtime San Francisco jeweler and early pioneer of quartz gold in jewelry, died here last night. He was among the nation’s oldest jewelers and a notable innovator in his field.

The Alameda arrived from the South Saturday night and passed to West ward yesterday morning. The Humboldt left for the South yesterday morning and will be temporarily off the run. The Northwestern arrived from the Westward and passed South last night. The Spokane arrived from Skagway and sailed South this afternoon. The Jefferson’s sailing from Seattle was postponed till tomorrow night. She is the next mail boat and will be due from Seattle Saturday. The Georgia arrived from Sitka yesterday. The Al Ki sails from Seattle Wednesday.
In Wrangell at Point Ellis cannery a shotgun fell and discharged striking Ernest Lamm assistant watchman and T Swanson a fisherman. Buckshot tore through both men’s legs. Lamm in serious condition. both hospitalized.
Seattle reports Alaska trade with the Territory for four busy months this year averaged 1,855,150 monthly, up 32,000 from 1912. Exports totaled 7,420,601 with iron and steel leading at 1,194,941, meats rising 176,042, and dairy eggs, lumber, livestock, fruits, and hay also up, despite adverse conditions.

In Chicago on December 15 Louis Nieman a local milliner and his wife Louise Nieman were shot and killed in their store by Emanuel Harner who sought to protect his wife from her husband. Harner also fatally wounded his own wife before killing himself in the incident.

Seattle December 15 Orville Blake Slee horticulturalist shot and killed Grace Pageville a divorced woman as she slept beside her mother then shot himself. The motive cited jealousy after she refused marriage.
Vice President Hulbert of Merchants Loan and Trust Co says the currency bill provides adequate agricultural credits. He notes American farmers are not suffering for banking accommodation or consideration.
