James A Reed former U S senator from Missouri married Nell Donelly in a private ceremony in Kansas City. Donelly, 43, is a wealthy wartime manufacturer and Reed’s longtime associate in a 1931 kidnapping case where he acted as her attorney. Both had previous marriages. Reed’s first wife died and Mrs Donelly’s divorce from Paul Donelly ended a 26 year marriage.
Washington reports a witness claims the liquor industry keeps a hidden trust and that federal and state regulation since repeal prompts graft and political influence. Rep O Connor urges a five dollar a gallon tax as the hearing tackles liquor taxation amid allegations of a whiskey trust. London notes the United States blocks world wheat recovery through subsidies and the Pacific Northwest export association.

A $65,000 steel bridge on the Sunset Highway above Snoqualmie Falls collapsed into the Snoqualmie River when a gaso line truck crashed into the railing and burst into flames. The heat melted the steel girders and the driver was badly burned.
Moscow reports that after sixteen years of U S Soviet estrangement, Ambassador William Bullitt presented credentials and pledged a forward movement toward normal friendly relations. He will succeed Albert White and is expected to assume duties about January 1. Mahoney was backed by the Democratic Committee and National Chairman James A. Farley with minor opposition described as personal. Senator Norman R. Walker supported him, and former Representative H. L. Ziegler was noted as an opponent among local factions.
