Glen Franklin, representative elect from the Fourth Division to the Territorial Legislature, spoke at the Lions Club meeting today. He discussed mining costs, taxation, and the need for balanced taxes to fund education health and welfare while opposing a sales tax.
A Christmas party will be held at the Northern Tavht Presbyterian Church Wednesday evening at 6:30. Mr and Mrs rt Seerist and Mrs Carlos W Hand prepare the covered dish supper Menu. Rev and Mrs Wills R Scot will lead the evening with a showing of the Christmas Story amid a community gathering. Greek press reports claim up to 3000 Communists repelled an assault near Karditsa in north central Greece.
The Fish and Wildlife Service vessel Penguin arrives from the Pribilofs with freight for Juneau under Capt. Don Drotning. It will sail tonight for Seattle with crew including six FVWS workers and Miss Bess O Neill aboard on annual leave. Cargo includes two airplane engines and a rare whale head to Seattle. Bad weather is reported leaving the Aleutians.
Anchorage Chamber of Commerce names Joan Gorsuch as secretary and John Gorsuch as president at a board meeting. New treasurer Cyve Paterson and Al Floyd take posts, with A. J. Toby Lee reappointed secretary. Also notes Korea UN membership request amid peninsula division.
Engineers from Seattle report progress on hydro surveys for the new pulp mill near Ketchikan. Water discovery supports a second lake for operation of a 225 ton mill, with crews drilling and soundings in Ward Cove aiding warehouse and dock construction. King Abdullah’s Arab Palestine plans face Egyptian objections.
Commander Carlson relieved of command of the CGC Wachusett after several months in Seattle. He departed for duty in Washington D C to report to Guard headquarters. Commander Warren L Boyd assumes command, with Wachusett assigned to weather patrol duties after transfer from Juneau.
Chet Barber longtime Fritz Cove resident dies Saturday after long illness in Juneau. Born Merrill Wisconsin 1880 he lived in a cabin on the Relph Retschi property for 16 years and fished summers until six years ago. Survived by brothers Hugh in Seattle and Claude in Los Angeles. Funeral arrangements pending word from relatives.
