Governors of West in New Fight over Timber Payments

Western Governors urged continuation of government payments on federally owned timber lands in lieu of taxes. The late Gov Harl Snell's demand for 1 percent of fair cash value was read by Oregon’s Gov John Hall, with Nevada Gov Vail Pittman and Washington Gov Mon Wallgren signaling support. Alaska’s governor warned Congress may cut fire fighting funds as Alaska faced its worst forest fires. Alaska’s Alaska was cited as part of the Western Regional Empire. Walter J. Welfare cuts force tighter relief in Alaska notes

Board of Public Welfare warns 1947 funds fall short for General Relief and medical care. About 43 severely ill or bedridden cases face care halt from January 1 1948. Daily costs exceed available budget as 900 people denied aid for lack of funds. Juvenile placement and dependent child services also constrained, with reduced staff and aid across communities. Amy Sherlock Elected Treasurer of VFW Auxiliary

Mrs Amy Sherlock was elected Treasurer of the Ladies Auxiliary of Taku Post Veterans of Foreign Wars at a special election. Several officers were named including Faith Stewart as Food Sale Committee Chairman and Esther Johnston as Rehabilitation Committee Chair. Five new members were elected for January initiation. An official visit by Deputy Chief Betty McCormick is planned for January 9. The group agreed to donate apples to Scout Troop No 13 for Christmas baskets and announced 63 cook books for the Alaska Crippled Children’s sale. Mrs Frank Stragler, formerly Justice of the Montana, welcomed a newborn daughter.

Lewis Breaks From AFL in Miner Strike Split

Washington report confirms John L. Lewis severs ties with the AFL in a move seen as paving an independent stance for the 1948 election. Federal Judge Folta sentences six year terms in Alaska cases

In U S District Court Judge George W Folta several defendants faced plea deals. Albert Grant Jr of Sitka pleaded guilty to three counts of morals offenses and drew six years in the federal pen. Andrel Grassemol of Ketchikan also pled guilty to one count and received six years. Willis Baker got four years for forgery and uttering a forged instrument, Harold A Spencer two years for uttering a forged instrument. Jack Hanson had charges dismissed. Burglary and larceny charges against Ray Fale and Cuville Jerome were dismissed on the recommendation of U S Attorney Gilmore. Raymond Maxsel was arrested for negligent driving after backing a taxi into a city police car. Testimony noted those sentences followed pleas or dismissals and a warrant from Haines.

Gang ride terror in Chicago as gunmen abduct and kill

A chaotic gang ride ends in multiple deaths and abductions after three gunmen shoot and abduct victims at a garage in the South Side. Police say two victims were found dead, two more escaped wounded, and one suspect was killed. a second shooter was captured and identified.
