Manila dispatch reports the liner President McKinley picked up 453 stranded passengers from rocky islets off Formosa after the President Hoover struck a reef at midnight last Friday. The master of the Preussen says 134 cabin and 319 steerage passengers were saved from two islets where they waited since early Saturday. Hoover's condition described as precarious amid heavy seas as the ship rests on a jagged shoal.

Japanese Admit Panay Bombing Mistake In Shanghai

Shanghai dispatch reports Japan admits responsibility for bombing the U S gunboat Panay and sinking it. A Japanese naval attache says three fliers attacked believing the craft were Chinese and out of sight of flags. The Panay, an American river gunboat of 450 tons, was sunk on the Yangtze by Japanese bombs. It had triple expansion engines, 2250 horsepower, and a top speed of 15 knots with two 3 inch guns and ten smaller weapons.

Earth Movement Felt at Hoonah

A minor earthquake was felt in Hoonah and nearby areas last Saturday around 3:58 AM with a second tremor at 9:50 PM. The quakes lasted several minutes and rocked buildings but caused no damage. No injuries were reported.

The Associated Press advised the State Department of the known wounded aboard the Panay up to noon today. Names include Lieutenant Commander J. J. Hughes, A. F. P. Anders, George Atcheson Jr, Frank Roberts, Emile Gassie, Vernon Puckett, and William Hoyle. Several others aboard were believed wounded but not yet confirmed.

Half Million Fire Ravages Washington Business District
