Prison exit bid foiled by tunnel near Walla Walla
Washington State prison guards traced convicts tied to a failed jailbreak 15 feet from freedom. Superintendent Tom Smith said as many as eight men worked on the tunnel in shifts over six days. Two inmates were captured as guards reached the tunnel but others were still shoveling toward the outside. First duty for CGC Storis on two calls in Alaska
Coast Guard cutter Storis began Alaskan service by aiding Alaska Coastal Airlines after a single engine plane made an emergency landing at Oliver Inlet. The same day the Storis was sent to Haines to evacuate a sick man, hindered by heavy seas, with ACA planes assisting and the aircraft later landing at Oliver Inlet. The Storis hoisted the plane to its deck and towed it to the ACA dock, while the pilot was Mike Fenster.

Congressional investigators prepare to release a dozen secret papers claiming Red Spyting operated in the State Department a decade. The documents would reveal military and diplomatic secrets once valuable to Russia and could crack codes used in American diplomatic messages. The papers came from former Communist Agent Whittaker Chambers who recently retrieved them from a Maryland farm. Chambers testified that he obtained some papers from State Department officials and that Mrs Alger Hiss copied some names on a typewriter. St. Mark's Mission School Destroyed by Fire in Nenana
In Nenana Alaska on December 11 a fire destroyed St Mark's Mission School one mile from town. Thirty five Indian and Eskimo children stood by as volunteers battled the blaze for 45 minutes in 85 below zero weather. Fire started in the basement furnace. No injuries reported.
