Allied forces continue a rugged push through mountains west of Pili gliano toward Cassino from the east. Fifth Army troops seize an important milelong advance while other units clash fiercely at Gun Pietro, seven miles southeast of Cassino. Italian troops rally to join the Allies as Badoglio promised.

In Tacoma Washington Col DeLong state director of selective service says he expects to call 1500 to 2000 fathers in January after Presidential approval of the Father Draft Bill. He notes Washington has deferral policy and only single deferable men remain, so the bill will have little effect locally.
President Roosevelt spent a 48 hour stopover in Carthage on his return journey and hosted General Dwight D. Eisenhower at a villa known as the White House. The visit followed meetings with Eisenhower at Oran and Cairo, with dispatches noting strategy discussions during Africa operations.
London speculation grows that President Roosevelt may travel to the British capital. German radio reports circulated in the U.S. place him somewhere in southern Italy with a brief front visit planned, and rumors of a meeting with Marshal Badoglio are denied.

At a western states GOP conclave in Salt Lake City Fred Baker of Seattle Washington state proposed an Alaska statehood plank. The move drew strong support and is said to be likely included in western state platforms.
Snow blankets southern mountains with road closures while downpours flood lowlands. A storm from Juneau hits Santa Barbara and Ventura causing at least 100000 in damage to crops and property. Ten oil derricks toppled and five fishing boats driven ashore with probable loss of life.
