MacArthur reports three Allied divisions pressing on Ormoc Philippines with the 77th Division driving the enemy from the outskirts and the Seventh Division closing the gap to five miles. Substantial enemy forces are in a squeeze, with six small ships sunk off the Seventh.
The Bertin radio said Germans lost Vac, 15 miles northeast of Budapest on the Danube, as Russians reinforced for the Budapest battle. Transocean added German lines were pushed east of the capital. Russians advanced from Hatvan and captured Aszod, sealing Budapest from the north.
Delegates from California to Alaska support forming an International Commission to handle fishing industry problems. George B. Miller of Vancouver backs the plan, saying it would aid cross border issues without breaking the no strike pledge. Also notes departures for Seattle on business and holiday trips by Hoffman McEachran Mulvihill and Fowler families.
In Ketchikan Alaska on December 9 Seattle halibuter Sanda L reported bringing in 30,000 pounds of halibut. Captain Elias Linvoy said 40 years of trouble followed seas as a connecting rod broke and the boat drifted 75 hours off Cape Fairweather in very bad weather before near shore repairs. Lingog plans to sell cargo then head to Seattle amid another vessel Middleton limping into Petersburg after losing her rudder and abandoning gear.
Paris reports France and Soviet Russia will sign an alliance before De Gaulle returns from Moscow. Officials anticipate a 20 year military aid pact similar to the British Soviet agreement. Pawcett Letha Bell Mrs R J Gregory and Stanley Johnson among others. Also listed are passengers from Skagway heading to Juneau such as Cpl Ausmus Helen Barry Major Lovgren and Marjorie Ryan.
Forty percent of Athens has not yet been cleared but 20 percent is reported free of ELAS detachments. New leftist milita concentrations were seen north of the capital after a provincial march. Inside the city ELAS units total about 250 death or glory members organized in 25 member cells with separate headquarters.
Mrs. Eunice Vivian Franks, 41, is charged with first degree murder in the death of her husband Nicholas Prank, 41, shot with a 22 rifle on a trolling boat during breakfast. Arraigned, held without bond, she told neighbors her husband would not work and had planned to sell her. Police reported she is under observation following the tragedy.
Ottawa reports an order in council allows United States fishermen in 1945 to land catches on the Pacific Coast of Canada and trans-ship them across the border or sell in bond for export without duty. They may sell for Canadian use by paying duty and enter ports to buy supplies for the crew while landing catches free of duty.

Congress sent a payroll tax freeze bill to the President amid large majorities in the Senate and House. If he signs within ten days after passage, it becomes law. a veto would prompt possible override votes before Christmas. The measure passed both chambers by sizable margins.
