The Agriculture Department told President Coolidge that American farming sits at its strongest point since 1920 yet requires further recovery to restore prewar conditions. For 1924 25 crop year income may reach about 12 billion dollars, up from 11.5 billion and 9.55 billion in earlier years. The report notes improved price relations with industry and a farm product purchasing power 18 percent below prewar levels but 16 percent above May 1921 lows. The 1924 harvest was the best in five years, though not the largest in volume, and prices must rise more for parity with other goods. Prosperity nears but farmers still endure hardship and adjusted gains are needed before normal prosperity returns. The wheat situation stands out with reduced bread grain surpluses and a hopeful world crop of 200 to 300 million bushels.
