Washington reports strong expectation that the Senate will approve the administration currency bill before December 20. The House faces Alaska railroad legislation and Hensley’s Naval Holiday resolution this week. Leaders hope to finish the currency measure to allow a two week holiday recess.
Three inmates in the city jail refused to clean gutters on downtown streets this morning. Capt. Martin of the police force declared no work equals no food while the prisoners recline in their concrete cells and will be fed bread and water tonight.
Charles Boyle one of the old pioneers of Juneau was taken to St Ann’s hospital last night suffering from pneumonia. Dr J K Simpson is in attendance.
James Hogan announced today that he has furnished every apartment in his Hogan Flats building. The furnished and comfortable units are to be rented either single or en suite for housekeeping or other uses.
Elmer E. Smith of Douglas today opened the Juneau Music Parlor in the Malony building on Seward street. The exclusive music house offers the latest instruments, pianos, and phonographs from Victor, Columbia, and Edison, plus records from all houses.
Case involving Smery Valentine and John Rustgard over the city tax levy was heard in Juneau court this morning. Valen tine was represented by J H Cobb while Rustgard appeared in person. City Attorney J B Marshall and Councilman also appeared. The hearing was postponed until 10 o clock tomorrow morning.
Mr and Mrs James R Whipple entertained at dinner Saturday evening at their Gastineau Heights home. Guests included Governor and Mrs J F A Strong Judge and Mrs R W Jennings Marshal and Mrs H le Faulkner Judge and Mrs John F Malony and Mr and Mrs Henry Shattuck. After dinner a bridge game followed with first prize won by Mr and Mrs Shattuck.
Seattle voters re elected William Pigott Nathan Eckstein and George A Spencer to the school board by comfortable majorities on Saturday.
The Juneau Lodge No. 420 BPOE held Memorial Exercises in the Elks Hall with 35 names in the roll of the dead. Vocals by Waldemar Engberg and Mrs. Angus Mackay, readings by George F. Forrest, and an address by Judge Royal A. Gunnison marked the solemn event. The Treadwell orchestra and Crystal B. Snow contributed music as the service closed with a benediction by Rev. J. B. Stevens.

In Sonora a battle of importance is anticipated east of Torreon as Gen Contreras informs Gen Carranza of leaving Torreon to meet two federal columns from the east. Constitutionalists count about 7,000, while federal numbers are not known. Sources report tensions between Villa and Carranza with rumors of a dispute.

W Nakiyama indicted in Ketchikan for first degree murder in the Dundas Bay case. He was arraigned today and will plead tomorrow. Previously Stow and E Fushima were convicted. Nakiyama testified for the defense and was detained until an October grand jury returned no indictment until court met.
Army chief engineers urge nine million dollars each for the Mississippi and Ohio rivers and two million for the Missouri and Columbia rivers to be spent in 1915. One million is asked for the Delaware river, outlining a broad plan for major waterway improvements.
In Seattle on December 8 the four-masted schooner Aloha broke free from tugboats below Cape Flattery and drifted as a derelict. There is no boat on board.
Judge R W Jennings admitted two new citizens today. Walter Bindseil, born in Germany, and Frank Ludwig Alstrom, born in Sweden and naturalized as a British subject, both residents of Douglas.

Seattle December 8 The Washington State Supreme Court sustained the validity of a million dollar bond issue by King County voters for a new courthouse on the block bounded by James and Jefferson streets and Third and Fourth avenues in Seattle. The proposed structure would cover the entire block.

In Calumet Michigan this morning rifle bullets shattered an apartment killing Arthur Henry James Brothers and Thomas Daly while Mary Nicholson was wounded. The James Brothers had just arrived from Toronto and found work with Copper Range Consolidated Mining Company as miners were on strike.
The Interstate Commerce Commission ruled railroads may not refuse shipments of butter eggs fresh beef and poultry until a formal investigation is completed. The Erie and Western Transportation Company was told to maintain current schedules with no changes until April 1 1914.

Mrs. Le. C. Eckles, 18, who wed on Thanksgiving Day, died last night after her dress caught fire from a heater. Rescue efforts arrived too late, and she perished from burns.
