President Harding informed Congress in his first annual message that the most gratifying world accomplishment of the Arms Conference is not improbable. He urged passage of a permanent tariff and foreign debt refunding bills and said he would later propose renewed considerations.
Delegate Dan Sutherland introduces a bill authorizing Interior to consolidate up to 40 oil permits under the 1920 act to speed discovery of petroleum deposits in Alaska and promote north Arctic Field development.
Riverside California reports power and reclamation are viewed as two major resource possibilities for the Cole project with discussion continuing on page two.
Washington dispatches report China will not concede on retaining the Kiao Chau leasehold in Shantung and will defend Manchuria interests. The Chinese delegation could with draw if talks harm China, but currently has no plan to. Japan agreed to waive preferential rights in Shantung after talks. Admiral Baron Kota denied Japan bargaining claims and blamed cable delays for naval ratio issues.
Hartford, December 6. Amateur wireless stations nationwide prepare for first extensive trans Atlantic tests from 7 p m to December 16 under the American Radio Relay League. About 15,000 to 20,000 stations will transmit and more than 100,000 will listen in with Major Armstrong predicting several signals may cross to Europe.
A British delegation member at the Arms Conference said it was unlikely Premier Lloyd George would travel to the United States for the conference. The statement followed an earlier report of possible attendance and noted ongoing uncertainty about the British leadership’s plans.
After ten years in opposition the Liberal Party won power in Canada as the Meighen government fell. W. L. Mackenzie King becomes the Liberal leader to form the new government, with Ontario and Quebec voting Liberal while the Prairies look split and British Columbia returns show a mix of Conservatives Liberals and Progressives.
A Whitehorse Star despatch reports in sixteen of twenty three Yukon Territory precincts George Black, Conservative, with 517 votes leads Frederick J. Congdon, Liberal, 499 and Pitts, Farmer-Labor, 11. Weather yesterday described as ideal for the election.
Governor Len Small and banker Vernon Curtis opened their legal defense by moving to quash the conspiracy and embezzlement indictments on grounds of insufficiency. The action took place in Waukegan Illinois on December 7.
The naval blimp C-7 the first airship inflated with helium a non explosive gas sailed over Washington landing at the Anacostia aviation station. The craft departed from Hampton Roads Virginia on the flight marking a milestone in safer buoyant air travel.
The Senate committee on public lands favorably reported a bill to add lands to Mount McKinley Park in Alaska and recommended amendments to the Smoot bill. The amendments permit agricultural entries on coal lands and grant homestead rights on coal lands.
Secretary Fall reports to Congress that Alaska hosts vast untapped resources across forests, lands suitable for agriculture, and mineral wealth, with transportation barriers cited. He urges consolidating authority under one department to coordinate development including railroad links from Seward to Fairbanks, wagon roads, and coastal to seagoing transport.
In San Francisco on December 7 the preliminary hearing for Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle was waived and the case moved to federal district court for disposition.
London reports a sensational agreement between the British government and Sinn Fein delegates. The accord, to be voted by British and Irish Parliaments, allows Ulster withdrawal after a month via a boundary commission. Ireland is described as an independent state in effect, with Ulster not required for implementation.
Mrs Katherine Marion White granddaughter of Viscount Gort files a 50000 dollar suit in New York Supreme Court against theatre manager Frederick J Bollinger alleging an employee falsely accused her of speaking to men she did not know. The 28 year old widow of Captain Henry T White is connected to British aristocracy.
Fort Worth Texas December 7 Tom and Tracy Macklin brothers were shot and seriously wounded while at a packing house strike in front of Ar mour and Co s packing plant Fred House a Black man alleged responsible was beaten by a crowd and taken to hospital after the shooting the incident occurred during strike disorders
London dispatch details draft terms for the Irish Free State including oath of allegiance to the constitution and King George V, Crown representation in Ireland, and phased defense arrangements with Imperial forces. Article 6 allows Irish coast and sea defense by Irish vessels for revenue and fisheries protection. Continued on Page Eight.
