Philadelphia discusses labor remedy proposed by Matthew Woll vice president of the American Federation of Labor. He urged shorter hours and higher wages to expand employment, arguing a higher wage standard benefits the many and advances national social progress.
Washington December five President Hoover plans to spend 150 million dollars on public building projects over six months. The first legislative step and criticism fade as House Appropriations Committee reviews the plan. Public Roads Bureau chief and Army Engineers chief testified that funds fund projects already approved by Congress.
Democratic leaders in Washington move to boost drought relief to 60 million dollars, nearly 2.5 times the Administration’s 25 million plan. Senator Robinson argues Congress must act generously as Agricultural Committee convenes budget hearings. Germany to hold its annual automobile show in Berlin in February.
Sir Thomas Lipton received a cup for the World’s Best Loser in New York City as he nearly broke down during his acceptance. The mayor’s secretary read his speech, and Lipton rested in Mayor Walker’s private office before stating he would renew the challenge for the 1932 America's Cup.

Glenn Carrington discloses the holding company will take over Juneau Young Hardware and J R Heckman firms, with Oliver M Olson retiring from local management due to ill health. John W Jones will assume temporary control as plans for stock purchases and store improvements unfold.
In Seattle on December 5, age and poverty drove two men to death. Chude Townsend was found slumped by an open gas jet, Lloyd Townsend, 8, his son, nearby. The widow and two young children survive. A second victim, unidentified, died from poison in the County Morgue with a note to his wife saying he could no longer endure after an accident.
In Aurora Nebraska on December 5 Jack Carroll of Akron Ohio and William Martin of Philadelphia found a pocketbook containing 1500 dollars at a railroad station. They returned it to the station agent who returned it to the owner. The owner thanked them with a one dollar reward.
Department officials announce a new policy delaying any withdrawal of Alaska public lands until the Governor has been consulted and can express his official view. The policy, backed by Interior and Agriculture, centralizes control and requires governor commentary before executive orders are transmitted to Washington. The Alaska Commission endorses the move, with Gov Parks, H Flory, and Dennis Winn supporting it.
Chicago report says Notre Dame football team is listed at 10 to 8 against Southern California in Chicago on Saturday marking the Irish as underdogs for the first time since 1928.
After negotiating water power licenses in Washington, D. C. and with Cameron Chandler and Zellerbach interests, B. F. Heintzleman heads to San Francisco to finalize timber sale contracts for Juneau and Ketchikan units. Licenses were granted recently by the Federal Power Commission.
New York City authorities raided a Park Avenue salon arresting Belle Livingston and eight employees for liquor violations. Twelve hundred dollars of liquor seized. Nine dry agents led the operation as top-hatted patrons were asked to leave. Belle Livingston, a former actress, aged 65 or so, was among those processed.
Julia Ann Christensen was acquitted of shooting her husband G. Christensen and partner John Hegebrecht near Port Orchard Washington last August. The jury took two hours ten minutes to reach verdict. She had signed a confession but later said it was obtained under duress. In Mannheim Germany the National Theatre canvassed to boost subscriptions for the coming season with reduced-rate performances.
