Secretary Hyde urged rallying farmers to curb overproduction to align supply with demand, warning that legislation cannot fix surpluses. He stressed voluntary cuts, wheat acreage reduction, and eliminating high cost marginal land, with cooperation to balance crops with market needs.
Secretary Hyde rebutted economist claims that overproduction cannot exist noting that overproduction occurs if the price received fails to exceed production costs by a margin sufficient to provide farmers a fair net income. He stated this in his annual report to President Hoover.
Thalia December 4 Paralel ing exploits of Alaska mushers D Don S Numbers returned here from a 30 mile dog team run with J. D. Monroe a 73 year old prospector critically injured Monroe was hauled most of the way on a sled and Dr Numbers said the man has a good chance of recovery though in serious condition from loss of blood due to ruptured ulcers in the stomach Numbers has made several other dog team rescues into Idaho mountains.
Paris Dec 4 The Tardieu Government was defeated 147 to 139 on the question of confidence. A resignation is expected. if not, it will mark the fourth such defeat in republic history. The last defeat occurred with Herriott in 1926. Also included are stock quotations from New York City with closing prices for Alaska Juneau mine and several major firms. A motor driven combine saved 20 cents a bushel on beans on William Fox’s Beckenridge Michigan farm.
Secretary Hyde declares federal reclamation policy conflicts with farm overproduction concerns. In a report to President Hoover he questions irrigation led expansion, urging restraint on arable acreage and prioritizing land-use studies, population growth, consumption trends, agricultural progress, and foreign trade outlook.
Seven nominations for next year’s chamber of commerce directors were submitted by the special nominating committee chaired by H. L. Faulkner. The slate includes E. M. Goddard H. M. Hollman J. J. Connors M. L. Merritt Dr. W. W. Connell W. L. Coates and H. Van derLeest. The election will be held next week after nominations from the floor were not added. The chamber also approved a tentative Western Division program for the National Chamber of Commerce to be presented in Portland. It calls for air mail extension Alaska Railroad expansion surveys of halibut cod fisheries and grazing land surveys along the Alaska Peninsula Aleutian Islands and Bering Sea and coastal islands to assess grazing potential. It also covers support for the Alaska section of the International Highway increased protection to shipping via a revenue cutter and continued Coast and Geodetic Survey work near the Aleutians. Notable progress in Juneau over six years was cited by Dr. W. H. Chase mayor of Cordova who praised the territory’s prosperity and warned political interference from Prohibition.
Salt Lake City reports Dr. Julian Stewart of Utah University archaeology finds a wound site with a dance house and 25 men’s club rooms, first of its kind in Utah. He notes many gambling sticks show Indians valued games and used parts of dwellings for pastimes, suggesting ancestors of cliff dwellers in the Southwest.
Federal funds and territorial money totaling 387000 plus 15000 were approved for a Forest Highway program in Alaska for 1931. Projects include Glacier Highway bridge work near Mendenhall River, reconstruction from Switzer's Dairy to near Lena Point, a spur to Lena Point summer home, Skagway River bridge, Tongass Highway extensions, Wrangell and Klawock Craig road sections, Portersboro road, Resurrection River bridge, and various surveys. Work to start early next spring with several bridges and road realignments planned to improve Southeast Alaska highways.
Berlin reports say two killed and a dozen injured as the hunger march in Liepzig and mob actions in Hamburg, Dresden, and Berlin escalate. A policeman died in Hamburg as a mob attacked officers, while Dresden and other cities saw windows smashed and clashes with Social Democrat aldermen during a Dresden council session. Disorder continues with shops shuttered and looting reported as marchers approach.
Dr Eckener described the R 100 disaster in London, attributing the gas seepage from forward bags that drifted aft and escaped through the tail. Loss of motive power followed ballast discharge and engine standstill, causing the airship to dip and burn as a spark ignited escaping gas.
A blaze lit the New York City waterfront from Standard Oil Company wharves causing an estimated 500000 dollars in damage. Firemen battled the flames with 300 plus firefighters as gasoline crude oil and turpentine stored on site fed the blaze. The fire damaged a fire boat and an oil tanker while eighteen tanks, traders and targets were destroyed.

House fights Treasury Post Office supply bills while tariff power and Muscle Shoals issues loom. Senate appointments draw battles over government operation and committee vacancies.

The American Game Conference in New York City recommended adding Game Wardens for Alaska and the removal of the bounty on the American Eagle in that territory.
George Charles Clark of Austin Texas has been nominated by President Hoover to be Vice Governor of the Philippines. W Jackson was admitted to St Ann's Hospital last evening and will undergo a surgical operation. Wilcox of Hoonall among the people at the Alaskan Hotel.
United States Senator Royal S. Copeland of New York introduced a bill authorizing a 400000 appropriation to fund a monument and historical museum at Seward Alaska. The project would honor former Secretary of State William H. Seward for his role in purchasing Alaska from Russia.
Two earthquakes rocked Burma near Rangoon on December 4, killing at least 22 and injuring many. Pyu district suffered heavy damage to buildings, a fish shack and other structures were damaged, and several railway bridges were rendered unusable. The shocks occurred about three hours apart causing widespread disruption and leaving scores homeless. Communication lines were broken, delaying information from other districts.
Burlingame California December 4 Prank McVeleh 28 secretary of the Burlingame Chamber of Commerce is said to be the latest victim of Suliturnis kidnappers reported by a stringer. He was reportedly held two days and released after a death threat.
The Moscow trial concludes as eight engineers face counterrevolution charges. Judges report most defendants confessed. only two remain silent. Court proceedings close amid implied mercy for the accused and final preparations for verdicts.
Armed soldiers patrol the ocean shores highways and lowlands between this city and Ensenada to stop unloading contraband liquor worth thousands. The liquor flows from ships on Rum Row off Lower California. Mexican officials cooperate with American Secret Service to halt the liquor flood along the southwest line from San Ysidro California to the coast.
The American Federation of Labor estimates 440000 men unemployed in November with President William Green warning that at the current rate of increase the total could reach seven million. Figures derived from union reports in 24 cities show a general employment decline nationwide though gains in railroads and theaters. Building, metal, printing, clothing, and service industries fell, while railroad work and theaters rose.
Washington December 4 two Alaska nominations sent by President Hoover are for U S Marshal positions in the Second and Youth divisions, both reappointments. Charles De Jones and Lynn SnaIt have served for several years and received endorsement from Republican National Committeeman Capt. A Luthrop.
Mrs Bruce sails from Yokohama for Vancouver to begin a U S aerial tour. She plans to travel from Vancouver to Spokane before visiting Indiana.
A daughter was born today to the widow of Major G. I. Scott, Commander of the diri Bible R10, who lost his wife at the last night of that ship. A child was born to Mrs. Dorven Rope, widow of Squadron Leader FP Kope, who perished in the crash of the E-100.
