Soviet radio reports describe German retreat in the Moscow front with gains recaptured in 40 villages in the Ukraine sector. Berlin says Reds pushed back in two key Moscow sectors as Panzer columns face reverse maneuvers amid heavy tank and infantry battles.
American trucks roll over the Burma Road under American management to reinforce Chiang Kai-Shek's forces. The fourfold freight increase spurred Japanese threats and prompted a White House call from Harry Hopkins to Daniel Arnstein to streamline the lifeline with lend-lease munitions, gasoline, and machinery.
Stock quotations from New York on December 3 show Alaska Junea at 48 2 3, American Can 75 1 2, Anaconda 27 3 4, Bethlehem Steel 59 1 2, and United States Steel at 52. Pound settles at 4.04. Dow Jones averages list industrials 116.65 rails 27.49 utilities 15.98.
Five Pan American planes arrived in Juneau from the Interior and Alaska points. one continued to Seattle while others were set to depart again tomorrow. Passengers included Harry Phillips and J R Walmer, with many Interior travelers like Oscar Schlickelser and Mary Pero and families aboard. The Electra carried G R Watkins and others back to Fairbanks this afternoon.
A meeting of 15 territorial and municipal officials with Gov. Ernest Gruening examined alleged unsanitary conditions in the Juneau native village. Little action occurred beyond pledging a fuller survey, with possible federal rehabilitation aid sought if local efforts fail. Paris December 3 German Command reports a German Medical Corps officer shot last night on Boulevard Magenta and imposes a 6 30 curfew for the entire Tenth District including the East Station. Curfew to continue indefinitely with authorities reserving the right to harsher measures.
The American Legion Auxiliary met at the Dugout with President Marion Hendrickson presiding. They outlined holiday drives including completed Red Grass hospital gown donations and Christmas boxes for sons of Legionnaires in service. Committees to assist Sitka service men and organize Christmas events were formed with designated chairs. The next meeting on December 16 will include initiation and Rehabilitation Month activities.
The Juneau Chamber of Commerce luncheon tomorrow noon at the Baranof Hotel will feature mining. Carl Whitham of Nabesna Mining Corp and Al Anderson ex aide of the Alaska Mining Association will speak on mining. Six new trustees for 1942 will be elected from ten candidates including Poss Green Burdick Schoettler Burford Nelson Whitehead Dyer Jones Cowling.
A Berlin broadcast reported Hitler ordered rapid concentration of all available forces under von Brauchitsch to halt the German rout in the Ukraine. Armored reinforcements were said to be moving toward the front as Russians pushed the Nazi lines back more than 75 miles beyond Rostov.
New York reports Wuliaima Knudsen, Co-Director of OPM, telling the Congress of American Industry that declared National Emergency is foolishness. He cites labor disruptions including the coal strike of November as examples of jurisdictional and organizational disputes delaying production.
Joseph T. Flakne director of the Territorial Employment Service returns to Juneau aboard the Baranof after a vacation that took him and Mrs Flakne to Los Angeles Spokane Winnipeg Medicine Hat Minneapolis St Louis Kansas City New Orleans Carlsbad Caverns and Juarez Before heading home he flew to Seattle Councilman Harry Lea and Mrs Lea also return to Juneau on the Baranof after a trip in the United States.
Washington December 3 A aviation expert predicts a dramatic growth in civilian aviation. He suggests as many as one in five or even one in one hundred Americans could hold a pilot’s license within the coming decade, aided by civilian pilot training programs and model airplane enthusiasm. Doane College reports CPTP grads advancing into Army and Navy aviation roles, with several continuing to advanced training and instruction tracks.
Alaska Mining Association members will meet in Seattle December 10 to discuss relief from shortages of labor and equipment under the ration defense priority system. Executive Secretary Al Anderson arriving from Fairbanks notes weld ing items and tractors scarce while steel for oil barrels is withheld. Lode and placer priority ratings A-8 and A-10 leave small operators hardest hit. many may fold without replacements, while big operators endure. Territorial Representative Howard Lyng of Nome and Alaska Democrat Committee chairman arrives in Juneau by Pan American plane to confer with territorial officials and fellow Democrats before vacationing in California. Lyng, a Seward Peninsula mining operator, is staying at the Baranof Hotel.
Joseph Tremel from Bremerton Washington arrived aboard the Barriof for a several month visit with his son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs J Garret.
