Navy reports a large American expeditionary force landed safely in New Zealand after sailing from a West Coast port under sealed orders. The convoy crossed infested waters without incident as New Zealanders cheered the arrival.
New York December 2 Anthony Cramer a 42 year old mechanic convicted of aiding Nazi saboteurs landed in the U S from a submarine in June has been sentenced to 45 years in prison and fined 10000 dollars by a Federal Court.
Wendell Willkie faced a call from Secretary of War Stimson hours before his Herald Tribune forum speech. Stimson warned that criticizing Admiral Darlan could hinder U S armed forces in North Africa and endanger soldiers. Willkie read the disputed paragraph to Stimson before continuing.
The Navy announces U S submarines in the Pacific recently sunk a Japanese destroyer and tanker and three cargo ships, damaged two more cargo carriers. The total enemy merchant tonnage sunk or damaged reaches 43 000 tons, with 48 enemy ships of all types confirmed sunk or damaged by American undersea craft in the Pacific.
Word reached Mrs. Trevor Davis that her mother Mrs. Andrew Ressing died in Olympia on Monday morning. Letters about her illness were delayed in transit, making the news seem an incomplete shock.
The President assigns Secretary Harold L. Ickes partial control of oil and gas rationing and reorganizes the petroleum administration under his oversight. Ickes gains power to decide amounts areas and timing of rationing where shortages exist or threaten.
Soviet Red Star reports Stalingrad defenders recaptured Yazhnaya Hill on the Volga city’s southern flank and pushed Nazi lines back two to five miles. A two day battle defeated an enemy division defending the hill as German siege efforts weaken. Kurgan Hill was also recaptured by crack guard troops amid seven Nazi counterattacks with up to 70 tanks.
Alaska Delegate Anthony Dimond endorsed Gov. Ernest Gruening s testimony on wartime censorship abuses in the Territory. He urged the Senate committee to hear him next week, citing delayed or withheld private and press dispatches from Alaska and Washington. Byron Brice, censorship director, may also testify. Norway s coastline is 12000 miles long, a fact noted in the report.
Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox said Jap casualties are five times U S losses, noting a brighter war outlook. He claimed the U S Navy is larger than before Pearl Harbor and that Americans paid a heavy toll in ships and material.
Secretary of State Cordell Hull said the United States is focused on the war in North Africa and not concerned with the Morocco radio report that Admiral Darlan had taken over as chief of state. He noted U S efforts are aimed at driving the Axis from Africa.

He coughs and strains to rally public morale while critiquing outsiders and downplaying peace cries amid wartime pressures. He argued Italy was misunderstood and warned opponents would mistreat it if stayed neutral.
President Roosevelt dodged questions on when World War II might end during a weekly news conference. He said the government has no official report on the French fleet and declined to comment on a possible secretary of labor and manpower merge. He noted tensions between the Army and War Production Board over authority had been resolved without an Executive Order.
Allied forces report part of the Tunis Bizerte highway captured, severing land links between the two Axis bases. Berlin and Moroccan radio reports claim forces reached defense lines between Tunis and Bizerte and battles continue from Gabes to Sfax. Bombers blast Bizerte Tunis and Tripoli as Hitler speeds troop movements by sea and air.
American and British troops closed the Tunisian ring around Bizerte after repulsing the major German counter offensive north of Tebourba. P 38 fighters and Spitfires claimed eight German planes down in 24 hours with one Allied aircraft lost.
The Juneau Chamber of Commerce will elect its Executive Board for the new year tomorrow at noon in the Gold Room of the Baranof Hotel. President C. W. Carter urged all members to attend the meeting, with many guests expected.
